Looks promising to me
Proposed by Paul Ryan

Proposed by Paul Ryan
quote:
Programs that would be merged include food stamps, cash welfare, housing subsidies, and heating aid for the poor, among others.
The Wisconsin Republican and 2012 vice presidential nominee is a respected voice within his party. His new "Opportunity Grant" plan would impose work requirements on aid recipients and require states that choose to participate to set up at least two service providers, a move he says would encourage partnerships with locally-based nonprofits and community groups that may better know the needs of their communities.

Sounds good in theory.
Two things that I don't understand how they haven't happened yet are: restrictions on food stamps to non-junk food AND drug tests for welfare.
Drug tests would pay for themselves, the business case has been presented several times. The fact food stamps can buy endless 2 liters of coca-cola and family sized bags of candy is absurd. Drink fricking water.

The existing system is broke. He is actively seeking alternative solutions. I like it.

If only he wasn't such a religious nut, I'd really like the guy. He wants to merge his religious beliefs with a lot of his proposed legislation. That is terrifying.

Democrats will never go for it.

Sounds like a good plan. Anything is better than what's going on now.

Agree with you on all of that.

What about people who intentionally get their kids to fail so they can get into special ed, thereby generating another government check? They seem to be tragically left out of this program.

I can get into any reform of this broken system. The first step doesn't have to be all-inclusive.

Skeptical on the drug tests paying for themselves....
But we definitely need to limit what they can buy on the govt dime. Especially with Obamacare.

No, it most certainly is not. We promise free shite and deliver, consequences to the country be damned. We keep the teat ready to suckle ... we get the votes. Leave our slaves alone ... we need the votes to stay in control.
Sincerely,
Liberal Democrats

We need staples distributed.
Rice. Beans. Flour. Etc.
There is zero reason we should give money to people who have made poor decisions and all of a sudden expect them to make responsible choices with money that they didn't have to earn.
If you actually want to help these people, take the decisions away from them and lead them in the right direction.

In my perfect world, food stamps would get you only beans and water. Something so that you would be able to survive, but so bad, that you would not want to be on it very long.
Realistically, though, food stamps should get you nothing but
meat/water/fruits/vegetables/bread/dairy.

The people that refuse to even consider a potential solution just because of where the solution came from shouldn't be allowed to vote.
I'll add one of the best pieces of management advice a boss ever gave me; "don't come to me bitching about problems, I know what the damn problems are. Why don't you try throwing in a few possible solutions along the way."
Any of you naysayers got any other potential solutions?

honestly. .. how is it different when others merge anti religious beliefs into govt?
The founders established freedom of religion. .... they always intended god to be a foundation of the nation.

I like most of what's been said in here... the programs definitely need to be overhauled and streamlined.
Merging everything would surely reduce overhead, and also make it easier to spot where people may be taking advantage. One thing I will add, I hope part of the plan is to eliminate the benefit "cliffs". Under the current system, there is little incentive to actually earn money, because at several points earning one more dollar results in a loss of several thousand in benefits. This doesn't seem to get mentioned often, and I think it should. There needs to be a smooth reduction in benefits as income increases, so that it is always better to earn more.
