President Donald Trump has on multiple occasions discussed trying to buy the country of Greenland, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Trump has with “varying degrees of seriousness” expressed an interest in trying to purchase the icy 811,000-square-mile island in the North Atlantic, according to the Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the deliberations.

The United States has previously tried to buy the strategically located country, which has a population of just over 50,000. President Harry S. Truman offered to purchase it for $100 million in 1946, but Denmark declined the offer, the Journal noted, adding the U.S. had also looked into acquiring the country back in 1867.

Yes it's huge.

You can see that frozen landscape during a flight from Europe to the US.

What’s it’s strategic purpose though?
Could maybe put solar fields there?

It would be another Seward’s folly.

Spoiler alert: buying Alaska was seen as stupid when we did it. No one’s laughing now, except us; all the way to the bank.

A second Alaska maybe?

who knows, it could hold natural resources in the future.
Also, it's strategic missile defense system base.

Dont play coy. You knew it was an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Perhaps like Scotland with a distinction here and there??

Im definitely not settled on it as of now.

Greenland is an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark

quote:

An autonomous administrative division (also referred to as an autonomous area, entity, unit, region, subdivision, or territory) is a subdivision or dependent territory of a country that has a degree of self-governance, or autonomy, from an external authority. Typically, it is either geographically distinct from the rest of the country or populated by a national minority. Decentralization of self-governing powers and functions to such divisions is a way for a national government to try to increase democratic participation or administrative efficiency or to defuse internal conflicts. Countries that include autonomous areas may be federacies, federations, or confederations. Autonomous areas can be divided into territorial autonomies, subregional territorial autonomies, and local autonomies.

Could be a good move for the U.S. but we should be cautious of the unemployment problems they have there.
