The aliens are supposed too be from Zeta Reteculi. A binary star system with multiple planets about 40 light years away.
At least that's what three infamous alien guy said. Who knows. I'll say aliens are as believable as anything else. With the vast number of stars I'm sure aliens exist. Now do they visit us? I don't know.
We say ftl travel is impossible. But 150 years ago flight was impossible.
Deep down i guess I want aliens.
But the scifi nerd in me knows that aliens would more likely be bad than good for us.

I've heard of the bridge. I've seen a show that even mentioned it before. But it's still a pie in the sky project
Just because of the money it would cost.
When proposed in 2007, they projected 65 billion. I bet its triple that now.
But we are losing the arctic resource race and have to do something. Trump is one of the few who seems to understand this.

President Donald Trump will host Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the White House on Thursday to sign a new icebreaker ship pact under which the Nordic nation will build four of the vessels, with seven more to be constructed in Texas and Louisiana.
We re getting one, a converted arctic oil rig supply ship.

The USCGC Storis, formerly known as the Aiviq, was officially commissioned on August 10, 2025, in Juneau, Alaska. This vessel is significant as it is the first polar icebreaker added to the U.S. Coast Guard fleet since the late 1990s, reflecting a renewed focus on Arctic operations amid increasing geopolitical activity in the region. The Storis is named after its predecessor, which served from 1942 until its decommissioning in 2007, and is recognized for its historical contributions, including being part of the first American transit of the Northwest Passage
The race for the arctic is on, and we are behind.

This is a silly idea. If there was such a need for commerce between the Aleutian Islands and Siberia there would already be deep water shipping ports there.
You really are stupid.

Especially if they discovered something akin to unobtanium for them here on Earth.

Where ya been? Portugal? Some far off tropical island? Did you see Jeffrey Epstein in slight disguise any where?

What use would such a thing be? No one lives up there and there is not enough commerce to justify it. It’s silliness.
There's not enough commerce in part because of the logistical nightmare of a harsh environment.
I think it's worth looking into. What is the potential? Would a contiguous land route to Russia actually increase commerce? How much daily trade and exchange could happen if you built a tunnel large enough for a couple sets of railroad tracks and some vehicle traffic lanes? And how much more efficient would it be than all the tens of thousands of freighters trudging along out on the ocean? Is the engineering even possible in such a geologically active region where massive earthquakes have happened just in our lifetimes, and would maintenance be possible and cost-effective?
I think these are questions that I'm open to hearing the answers.
The fact is, there needs to be new routes of commerce and new partnerships and cooperative agreements between nations of the Western World to offset the increasing influence of Communist China over the global economy.

Do you like flying nowadays or is it harder as you get older and ears pop? Xanax? Or it makes you too groggy for business?

This is about the future. Opening seas in the Arctic comes with resource exploration.
We are behind and have been behind. My guess? We will do little and stay behind. We dont plan for the future, just short term profiteering.

Very curious how the 82 people on Little Diomede' get supplies? Hunt? Is it like Kellys Island, Put In Bay on Lake Erie. Ferries help them, but what about when the water is frozen? When they need mainland hospitals? Snow sleds? Helo's?

Helicopter. They get freight/mail/passenger service from the Seward Peninsula.
They can land small planes on the sea ice in winter, so they have that route too.

I like history and geography so I had to look

I like weird places, but Diomede is too weird for me. I understand during the Cold War many traveled across the ice on foot or sled to Big Diomede to see relatives.

If the technology works for the tunnel do you no suppose a cheaper way to transport goods in the future?
It might be worthwhile if it were connecting two major industrial areas where there was a heavy amount of trade, but, as another poster said, we don't do enough trade with Russia to make it worthwhile. Plus, there's nothing up there on either side. Russia doesn't even have a highway leading from populated Russia to that part of the continent. Further, it's still cheaper to transport bulk items by water than it is by land. This would be a complete waste of time and resources.

Cool, I would drive to Russia
