Remind me why manifest destiny stopped at the Rio Grand?

My theory has a few parts.

1) International diplomacy. The Monroe Doctrine was still fresh and we didn’t want to seem hypocritical in taking too much territory from newly independent nations that we, ourselves, had told Europe to stay away from.

2) Manifest Destiny, by definition, was about westward expansion. There was a ton of opposition in Congress and the North to the Mexican-American War, but Polk intended to keep the promise that had gotten him elected. After Guadalupe Hidalgo, his promise was kept (outside of 54° 40’).

Meh.... he's skipping over the fact that the US attained that land by whooping some Mexican arse in a war!
To the victor go the spoils. A principle as old as humanity. If Mexico wants it back, it's going to take more than a map on a piece of of paper to reclaim it.
Not that I have any particular fondness for California, but unfortunately it is part of America.

I love third world crapholes trying to talk tough.

The Mexicans should have done better in 1830, or declare war and see how it goes.

Wait. They stole land from the Spanish who stole it from the Indians and then sold it to the US after getting their arse kicked and he wants it back? It's like Indian giver inception.

Sure, they can have it back.

BUT, have it back the way it was in the 19th century: no infrastructure, no improvements, no nothing. Just dust and wild animals.

Suerte, idiota!

That's cute.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, officially ended the Mexican-American War and resulted in Mexico ceding a vast amount of territory to the United States

Fight us bitch.

Also

quote:

The United States paid Mexico $15 million and assumed debts owed to American citizens by the Mexican government.

$15 million in 1848 is worth approximately $600 million to $750 million in 2025.
