Before you get all pissy: I am all for any law that seeks to get as many able-bodied people off the dole as possible. Not only on moral grounds, but also so that we may use that money either to give it back to the people or for worthwhile public expenditures.

However, here's a little hidden issue: what about the working poor, who are able bodied and choose to actually be productive? These people will be hurt, because supply and demand dynamics tell us that as the supply of labor increases, these people will be seeing a fall in their take home wages, as they will be competing with ex-loafers now entering the labor force.

It would be difficult for me to support an initiative that causes the take home pay of somebody doing things the right way to fall.

I will believe this when I see it.

So we should keep welfare intact, because it may impact a few slow wage workers?

Who else should be exempt from competitive forces?

No one on welfare that is forced to work will be getting above minimum wage. These are people that have no skills, no desire to gain skills and no desire to use any potential skills they may accidentally gain against their will.

How is one doing things the right way ... when the only job he or she can do ... is in direct competition with jobs that even the most dreggest of dregs evidently can do if the dregs decide to get off their asses and get a job?

That doesn't seem like "the right way" to approach a career and stability.

Problem with ex-loafers is that they never actually become ex-loafers.

It is nice of you to think about Federal, State, and Local Government employees, though.

Very compassionate.

In the short run? It's a big maybe actually. Most low income workers still have some skill set. It's unlikely that people coming off of welfare will possess the same skill set as those who are currently employed.

In the long run that market will adjust.

These are the very definition of loafers.

I wouldn’t worry much over this.

It’s the propaganda media’s job to find the one-in-a-million worst case scenario who’ll be devastated by a change like this, and trumpet that shite as a “human interest” piece multiple times daily until it seems like everybody in the country will be screwed.

Oversimplification. Working poor will have experience which in a tight labor market gives them upward mobility. It is a reason "get your foot in the door" is a thing.

Hunger is a great motivator. Cut off everything to anyone who has been in the system for more than a year. Unless you have a verified illness or disability. Being fat and lazy are not covered.

Their choices will be:

1. starve
2. get a job
3. steal something and get away with it
4. steal something and get shot in the face
5. steal something and get caught and go to jail.

Im ok with any of those. Even #3. Cause that wont always work for them and eventuality they get either shot in the face or put in jail.

Let's be real. Competition makes everyone better. More than likely these professional "loafers" will be getting minimum wage jobs. So as the name implies, those wages cannot fall. Those current minimum wage workers may lose their jobs or other job opportunities to others, but that is business. If you want to keep your job or find a better one, work harder and develop your skills.

For many of the people that I have seen at minimum-wage jobs, they need someone to scare them a little. Many of the people working as cashiers cannot even look up to say hello or fake a smile.

The problem is food stamps. Hunger used to be a great motivator. We've removed it. That's why poor people are obese.

I will never understand why we insist on ignoring this fact.
