I think the post-work future looks quite bright in the areas that really matter.

quote:

In western countries too, he argues, the absence of work would produce a richer culture. “The postwar years, when people worked less and it was easier to be on the dole, produced beat poetry, avant garde theatre, 50-minute drum solos, and all Britain’s great pop music – art forms that take time to produce and consume.”

Graeber argues that in a less labour-intensive society, our capacity for things other than work could be built up again. “People will come up with stuff to do if you give them enough time. I lived in a village in Madagascar once. There was this intricate sociability. People would hang around in cafes, gossiping, having affairs, using magic. It was a very complex drama – the kind that can only develop when you have enough time. They certainly weren’t bored!”

quote:

There is a strong artisan tendency in today’s post-work movement. As Hester characterises it: “Instead of having jobs, we’re going to do craft, to make our own clothes.

My dogs haven't worked a day in their lives. Everything they do with their free time seems to create more work for me.

I like working. I’m that guy who is always responding to emails every chance he gets.

Find something you can geek out over and you won’t feel like work is such a drag.

I'm pumped. God's eyes, macaroni picture frames, crappy clay ashtrays, and bead necklaces for everyone! The future can't get here soon enough.

I don't think that can be emphasized enough.

I worked for a few years before going back to college and I realized that working for the sake of paying the bills was no way to live. Indeed, that's what sent me back to school. So I studied different things in college until I found a field that 'geeked me out' and made a career out of it. I'm currently working to get to a point where I won't have to worry about work for pay anymore.

More utopian preadolescent prattle. Something for nothing always ends up costing more in the end than just working and paying for it upfront.

People with time on their hands: Crips and Bloods, antifa, Bolshevik of 1917, Fascist of 1920s, Nazis of 1920s and 30s. Idle hands are the Devil’s workshop, Proverbs 16:27. Not trying to wow you with a Bible quote, but this is attributed to Solomon a wise man. In the almost 3,000 years since, it still holds true for basic human existence.

Here’s some art you should expose yourself to, A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess, or if too busy watch the film by Stanley Kubrick. Movies are never as good as the books however.

I think there will be a lot value in people having options to do something they enjoy, but I think this article really misses the point of that value by focusing solely on artistic things. There are a ton of other things that people could do instead, many that have more practical value, and they are actually things that often qualify as work, but would be enjoyable work in his scenario.

Without work. Our country would turn into a dystopian shithole.

Libs believe that without jobs, they can sit around, contemplating the complexities of life. The reality is, most of them are dumb.

They will sit around and come up with a million new pretend genders. That will be the extent of their contributions.

American culture would consist entirely of who can be the most offended.

IMO the thought of a "post-work" society is not outlandish. I think it's inevitable actually.

There's absolutely no doubt, barring a major catastrophe, that technology will get to the point where 99% of the jobs we see today will be gone. Couple that with population growth, and there will just not be enough jobs to go around.

That being said, the problem with articles like this and other liberal views, is that we're nowhere close to that point. It may be 100's of years away. Work should still be required to earn a living, and it should be valued. Talking about it now just gives people another excuse to be lazy.

Then move your lazy arse back to Madagascar. The rest of the civilized world doesn’t want to live in a god damn hut in a third world country.
