Have been laid off 3 times in my career, have been told by both private and government workers 'tough shite, find another job'
I empathize bc it sucks but government work as we know it has had to change for the longest time

Laid off three times. The first time I fought it and was rehired into another group. I left the company shortly thereafter for a much better job in Virginia. The 2nd time was the worst … I ended up taking a similar job at a lower salary just to have a job. A year later I was rehired by the same company that laid me off. The last time was a total facility closure with an extremely generous severance package.
It sucked each time but contacts I had made helped me through it and eventually end up better off. Things happen for a reason.

Never been laid off but I’ve been fired a couple times.
Dealing with uncertainty becomes easier the more you do it.
Here’s what you learn:
The world doesn’t owe you a damn thing.

I’ll welcome the next layoff … I’m close enough to retirement that I’ll take the severance package and ride off into the sunset.

For the younger ones (under 30), would be a good time to join the military.
You know you’ve got at least a few years worth of sane leadership at the top. Do 3-4 years and see what options open up.
I wouldn’t have recommended this three months ago.

I worked in the Oil & Gas industry for 25 years. Over all the ups and downs in the industry, I was laid off 2 times. Life is hard. Get over it and find another job.
Funny thing is, in the private sector this is expected and understood when there is bloat to reduce. Also in the private sector when this happens, good employees get let go as well as bad ones.
It's easy to bloat the budget on employees when you don't have to turn a profit, you are spending other people's money, and when it runs out you can raise taxes or print more.
The USPS is the shining example of how the government can be so inept that businesses can make millions while they show losses and they set the minimum pricing.

You're a broken mess, dog. Figure it out.

Some don't. Some are very generic clerical workers that are overpaid. Some have useful skills but there are limited jobs in their field outside of government. Regardless, they weren't owed a job.

I have had to hand deliver pink slips. It’s not fun. But very common in construction. Guys usually know it’s coming when a job starts to wind down or they know there isn’t a lot of work going on.

You're a joke to everyone that isn't you, for what it's worth. I'm here to help if you ever want it.
