They wanted Trump to win the primary because he has some pretty big limitations with a General Electorate. In 2016 and 2020 there were between 5-6 million people who voted for at least 1 down-ballot Republican (in a contested race) but didn't vote for Trump. Nearly all of those voters are registered Republicans and Independents who historically vote Republican. That level of ticket-splitting hasn't occurred since 1996, and that was only because Dole had to contend with a spoiler (Perot) who took away his votes. Perot voters voted Republican down the rest of their ballots.
They don't want him to win the General. They're not scared of him. If they were, they wouldn't have been rooting for him to be the nominee. Kristol and the Lincoln Project were far more critical of DeSantis than Trump during the primary. They complimented Trump several times. The reason for the arrests is they're trying to weaken him even more so that he loses in a landslide. They don't want him to just lose, which he probably will. They want him to get humiliated.

For many (myself included) the disbelief stemmed from thinking Dems would be smart enough to pull up before a verdict. I always figured the indictments were designed to help Trump in the primary (and they did) but in the end they'd not press for convictions because it would be stupid to turn Trump into a (legit) victim/martyr. Well, Dems are stupid and they've turned November into a red wave.

No, they are trying to arrest him because they are tyrants and will do the same to all future republicans. You’re blind if you don’t see this. If you think Donald Trump is the only Republican who will be tarred and feathered by blue state DAs - I don’t know what to tell you.They also don’t give a flying fk about elections or election interference because they literally control all of the agencies that could do something about it.
