Pope Francis has been slammed by church officials and sex abuse survivors for cutting penalties for paedophile priests.

The Pope is said to be applying his vision of a 'merciful church' to sex offenders by reducing punishments to weaker sentences, such as a lifetime of prayer and penance.

It has been revealed by church officials that Pope Francis overruled advice given to him by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith about two priests - allowing them to be punished by a lifetime of prayer.

One of the priests was the Reverend Mauro Inzoli, who was found guilty of abusing young boys by the Vatican in 2012 and was ordered to be defrocked.

However, he appealed, and in 2014 Francis reduced the penalty to a lifetime of prayer, prohibiting him from celebrating Mass in public or being near children, barring him from his diocese and ordering five years of psychotherapy.

Rev Inzoli was then convicted by an Italian criminal court for his sex crimes against five children as young as 12.

He is now facing a second church trial after new evidence emerged against him.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

But hey, they did say a couple Hail Something or Others and lit a few candles. So we're good right? Maybe some cheese and crackers with a couple glasses of wine later.

Keeping your clergy from being able to marry before (and obviously after) ordination ends up attracting some odd cats. Certainly not all of them, but it's more prevalent than it should be.

Unless the "penance" is 50 years at hard labor, I just don't get this.

Statistically it has been proven time and again catholic priests abuse at a rate about the same as Protestant clergy and both are much, much lower than general society.

It pisses me off every time it happens and the church should have a zero tolerance, but the abuse is not about being able to marry.

Based on what's reported I'm sure there is much more.

Yep. How can a parish priest effectively give marital advice to a young couple if they have no experience of their own? I'm sure they can provide some insight, but it won't be as on point as someone who has direct experience, IMO.

What does It matter what the Pope says? Is there some kind of law that exempts them from going to prison?

Shouldn't they be serving a lifetime of prayer as a base case requirement of being a priest??

Its sad but somehow this is still an upgrade from house abuse was handled under JPII and Benedict.

Hell Benedict's job under JPII was essentially squashing abuse complaints before they could break into the mainstream.

Marriage is more about self sacrifice and love. They know more about those two things than most people.

That's just a bit more than letting him off with a prayer.

but at the end of the day the Pope will still tell you that regardless of how good a Christian or even how good a Catholic you are that transubstantiation only occurs with the prayers and hands of priests. Your own prayers are not enough. Only through these men, according to the Church, can you receive the Body and the Blood of Christ.

What a crock.

Only through studies financed by the Catholics. But if you want to compare priests to protestant clergy then why not compare the differences in the power the Catholics claim for their priests to the mere mortal status most protestants claim their clergy to have.

Catholics love their pedophiles.

Maybe Podesta and Milo should convert.
