So they won’t START for 2.5 years? That doesn’t seem great. He should be starting yesterday. What am I missing?

They aren't even done negotiating. Lots of details will have to be hashed out in the meantime. That time window for verifiable denuclearization is well within reason. Obviously everyone should shoot for an earlier start but you have to set a boundary somewhere.

When exactly did NoKo start denuking during Obama's term?

This will be the media line today. Trump is waiting too long.
Don’t you know you can just, like, throw a nuclear weapons program in the trash can tomorrow broski?

You are misreading.
He says he wants major steps to happen BY the end of the first term.
Not start at the end.

If it's first step that essentially irreversible, then that seems quite reasonable. If it's not really irreversible then this seems awfully convenient right election time.
Like just far enough to ensure that it appears like it will eventually happen, but not quite far enough in case they eventually reneg the political fallout won't happen until agree the election.
