Police officers should have a requirement to have been in the military.

Preferably having been in a conflict situation as well.
Have to pay them a bit more, but damn you’d have a well trained person who legitimately has shown the ability to handle complex situations and make it through.

So you want a more militarized police force?
Posted on 6/10/20 at 7:25 pm to Gaston
I don’t want law enforcement to be at war with me I’ll pass
Posted on 6/10/20 at 7:25 pm to Gaston
I don’t think that’s a good idea.

Those are some of the worst ones

The worst idea i've heard yet.

This person clearly does not know many Iraq war vets.

My friend, who has killed people in war, would be the most level headed and capable person possible for the job. They would de-escalate situations with precision, they just read situations better.
My friend also is smart AF and has a way better job. Just saying.

Uh...no thank you. Some of the Einsteins in the Military would legit scare the shite out of you with their brilliance.

They have rules of engagement. Clearing a shithole city and not killing innocent people is harder than being a cop.

He hasn’t told me many stories, he’s mostly haunted for life, but the ones he has let me know he absolutely doesn’t want to kill again.

In all seriousness, do you even diversity bro?
Not diversity as far as race, but backgrounds, education, life experiences, training, past careers, ect.
This best part of not focusing on just military for applicants is it allows a wide variety of people to be a part of the solutions to solve problems in the community. Singling out only military veterans for civilian law enforcement would keep a lot of educated or highly trained and capable applicants from serving.
The common denominator we all look for in law enforcement is integrity. A strong, uncompromising moral compass.
Bad apples some times make it through the process or develop over time after years on the job. It happens. The key is to have an agency with a culture of strong, high integrity people to discourage the bad ones from becoming the norm.

They have records, clear and available...if they’re shite heads they don’t get the job.

I suggested police subservience to civilian control in another thread and was downvoted 25-0, so your idea might have some merit.

Absolutely not.
Ex military people have a very hard time adjusting to being a civilian LEO.
I started my career when the Viet Nam guys were still in the profession. They were very militaristic and that led to lots of problems. Things calmed down a lot as those guys retired off and policing really worked hard to hire college educated officers. It got a lot better. Then, 911 happened and right back to militarization. Here we are once again.
