Piers Morgan has attracted another storm of criticism after lashing out against yet another high-profile woman of colour.

This time, it’s after he said it was a “joke” that decorated US Olympic gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from Tuesday’s women’s team final for mental health reasons.

Earlier in the day Ms Biles, the most successful US gymnast of all time, announced she wouldn’t be participating in the upcoming women’s team gymnastics final after coming in for the worst vault score in her storied career. She said the pressure of being the world’s pre-eminent gymnast was causing her mental health to deteriorate, leaving her worried she’d leave the Games “on a stretcher.”

“I don’t trust myself as much anymore. Maybe it’s getting older. There were a couple of days when everybody tweets you and you feel the weight of the world,” she said of the decision. “‘We’re not just athletes. We’re people at the end of the day and sometimes you just have to step back. I didn’t want to go out and do something stupid and get hurt. ?I feel like a lot of athletes speaking up has really helped.”

This decision apparently irked the former Good Morning Britain host, who suggested she wasn’t being sincere and was merely upset over a “poor performance.”

“Are ‘mental health issues’ now the go-to excuse for any poor performance in elite sport? What a joke,” Morgan wrote on Twitter. “Just admit you did badly, made mistakes, and will strive to do better next time. Kids need strong role models not this nonsense.”

The comments were quickly criticised, with people arguing Morgan has a penchant for targeting Black women struggling with mental health, following previous digs at tennis star Naomi Osaka and Meghan Markle after they shared their own experiences.

“Once again Piers Morgan has shown he has no respect for black women, going out of his way whenever he can to be nasty to any high profile black woman who struggle with their mental health,” wrote British DJ Jumpin Jack Frost.

Others, like writer David Gardner, pointed out how the TV presenter had defended other public figures struggling with mental health, like footballer Paul Gascoigne, while labelling Ms Osaka an “arrogant spoiled brat” and “petulant little madam” for withdrawing from the French Open for mental health reasons.

“Piers Morgan has repeatedly defended Paul Gascoigne during his mental health struggles,” Mr Gardner tweeted. “But he won’t extend the same sympathy to Naomi Osaka, Meghan Markle or Simone Biles. I wonder why.”

One cheeky Twitter user noted that like Biles, Morgan famously walked away from his job at a key moment, during an on-air row with his co-hosts about his comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan had said he “didn’t believe a word” of what Ms Markle said in the interview, where she spoke of racism and suicidal thoughts during her time as a royal.

The presenter left ITV in March, and later conceded that it was “not for me to question if she felt suicidal.”

The Independent is attempting to reach Morgan for comment on this story.

This new narrative that black women need to be protected and can't be criticized is nonsense. Pick one, strong black girl magic or black girls are fragile. You can't have both.

Piers Morgan has shown he has no respect for black women

If she wants to generalize Simone and the tennis chick (name not important) into "all black women" then let's use her rules. Overall, in general, do the majority of black women deserve respect? Remember, this puts Oprah, for example, into the same group as the all too common "6 kids 4 daddies but not a father to be found" Welfare Zombies you see getting groceries on your dime.

Don't think she wants to play those odds. Let exceptional women stand on their own, for better or worse. Simone doesn't deserve being propped up because of her race when her actions and treatment by the judges had nothing to do with her race. But alas, today's media has to make disfunction seem normal.

If she truly has a severe enough mental issue to keep her from 36 hours of work, I do feel sorry for her. I personally don't think she does, but I have nothing but instinct to rely on, so that is immaterial. All I know is I convinced myself not to find out what buckshot tastes like for years, and I went to work every day. When I had to run a sales meeting or make a pitch to a big customer, I was always there and on task because people relied on me. Anecdotal yes but I believe it is valid. Simone could have gutted it out. I know she was being treated unfairly and that is reprehensible, so I don't really blame her for taking her tight pony tail and going home. Wish she would have found a way to finish, for better or worse, with honor.

So if a black person is critiqued for performance it racism but if anyone else is critiqued it’s over execution of said performance . Okay I finally understand now , only everybody but black people can underperform . And everything black people do is the best and we are racist if we don’t think so .

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

If blacks want to be respected then they need to be able to take the negatives whites get. Otherwise what's the point...oh yeah..."equity" not equality.

I get the stress. Especially since I think her family wasn't there with her due to wuflu protocols. But an athlete at her level needs to be able to handle it. Why professionals get paid so much for it, as it's a part of it. Not just the glam.

We crossed the unfortunate line where when everything is racist nothing is. Its truly a disturbing trend.

Could you imagine feeling good about yourself knowing you were a charity case for society? It would be impossible.

Quit - to cease, discontinue, relinquish or resign. Yep, sums up what she did, but instead Morgan is made the villain.

The media will NEVER admit they play a role in creating the massive pressure athletes face through their hype propaganda. Still, if you're expected to be the very best in the world you have to expect that at some point you'll not be that anymore. Athletes have been dealing with this forever.
This declaration of resigning for "mental health reasons" is simply afraid of being embarrassed on the national or international stage.
Finish it out good or bad, and if you have to back off your routine because you're afraid you'll hurt yourself just do it and live with it.

We've been told and shown that for my entire adult life. You say it tongue in cheek, but in reality it is true.
