It's the go-to in the Democrats' playbook. The fall back is white supremacy/racism. Then threat to Democracy, or maybe that's the new number one with the current Democratic party. They are nothing if not predictable.

Unfortunately in today’s world, it is easier to write a quick quiet check and forget about, instead of fighting. Fighting it can cost a whole lot more than paying attorneys to fight and create a media spectacle no matter how right you are, since the way the media reports things and the way the public perceives it. You are guilty until you can prove your innocence.
And sometimes a check isn’t enough, sometimes they clawback for more as you attain more wealth.
