what does this mean?
which circumstances do we need to adapt to, and how?

My favorite is when nothing happens all day and then the 1SG keeps everyone till 1800 so he can come back from battalion and release everyone.

Well that was more related to the military aspect, the nature of which tends to change much quicker than our spending patterns do.

I don't want to "cut" any of them as much as I would like to reform all them to eliminate waste and improve adaptability to changing circumstances while at the same time putting us on a path to financial stability.
Thank you for the thoughtful and composed response. I think we're all (most?) in agreement that there is an obscene amount of waste taking place with government spending.
Common ground for many different political points of view.

Need to work on those sham skills. My motto was "Always on Appointment".
I became an officer now I crush anybody that keeps Joe late for no reason. My last unit every Tuesday I'd put out a list of tasks that needed done and if it was complete by Friday at lunch I'd do a walk through with my 1SG and cut everybody early. Sometimes battalion or brigade fricked us over with a late formation but more than half the time we could get away with it.
On the flip side as a former E4 Black Belt Sham Master I do a decent job busting up the shitbags. I still realize just like a warden never fully runs his prison, you never know everything that is going on under you.

Was talking to a guy a couple weeks ago and he was telling me that they'd go to the range and waste bullets so that they didn't get their budget cut.
I can vouch for that. We always fired all excess ammo at the end of the day.

Yep just turn your rifle sideways and all the empty shells go right into the ammo can. Used to drive me nuts because I love shooting, spend all day at the range, maybe fire 52 rounds between zero and qual and then blow off 200 into a can and have that much more shite to clean out of your rifle.

Actually yes, insurgencies are the hardest to stop. We rolled Iraq in a few days and then got bled dry over 8 years by a bunch of dudes in sandals and man dresses.
No, we got bled dry because the leadership of this nation didn't actually have a plan of what to do with the people of the nation we just colonized.

No arguement from me there but if someone actually overtook the U.S. by force they would be on the end of an insurgency 10x stronger than what we faced in Iraq. Only real disadvantage we have is all the fatties.

Gotta do something about all the fatties.

My first division officer on my ship was like this. When we were in port he'd list out the things he wanted to see done for the week on monday and when they were done we were done. You'd never seen so many sailors busting their arse working but most weeks we were done with his list by wednesday or thursday. After that other then duty sections we'd see him again on monday.
It was a sad day when that man retired and we got a ball buster.

I don't agree with you on hardly anything but at least you aren't one these people who constantly bitch about the size of government then complain when military cuts are on the table.
I don't discriminate when it comes to cutting gov't spending and making gov't smaller. Military spending needs to be cut by about 42 to 45 percent.
Everything needs to be cut and/or eliminated if we ever hope to save this country's financial freedom and security. It's like when you have too much shite on your phone or laptop and it's going to affect what you need it to do like texting or photoshop and you have to get rid of a lot of stuff on it to get it working efficiently.

The problem is identifying that 10% waste.
Not really. Any leader could easily name the 10% in his command that are just collecting a check. The hard part would be limiting it to 10%.
eta- If you weren't referring to personnel, I apologize in advance.

For others, it's a stable job that offers a great benefit package and solid pay. The thought of going out on their own and losing that security is not appealing.
So I guess your advocating for a system of 4-6 year enlistments with no retention set in place were people cant stay in to make a career?
