A state appeals court has affirmed a lower court ruling that thousands of New Orleans teachers fired after Hurricane Katrina were denied the constitutional right of due process.
A panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal also adjusted the lower court's damage award, ordering the New Orleans school board to pay two years of back pay and benefits and requiring the state to pay an additional year of back pay and benefits to teachers who meet certain requirements.
7,500 teachers, $1.5 Billion

I suspect there will be an appeal.

That's $200,000 PER TEACHER. NO teachers were averaging $67,000 per year?

Back pay + benefits it says. That's probably the sum total of payroll SS tax, contributions to TSRL (~13%), health insurance contributions - the total economic value of their compensation - plus judicial interests + court costs.
Median is 52k

Looks like only the top 10% break 67k
Just a guess.

$1.5 billion for a terrible job done. I wouldn't want to send my worst enemy to the public schools in New Orleans before Katrina.

No shite, and from there you go to the Louisiana Supreme Court.

So, remove the funding from NO public school system over the next 5 years. Tell the parents and current teachers it's the old teachers fault. Give phone # and address of said teachers.

I saw that too.
I'm sure it was one of the teachers. True genius.
ETA: The NOLA article has been expanded to discuss the court ruling. FYI

There's a decent number of people in New Orleans who basically live by the 'Thanks Obama' meme in pretty much everything that goes bad, only with regard to Jindal.
It's fairly amusing actually.

I guess New Orleans will have to dip into its rainy day fund to pay that judgment. Good thing the city has so much surplus money.
Why does the state have to pay an additional year instead of New Orleans paying all years?

The state pays a portion of all teacher salaries, the individual parishes or school districts can supplement and all do supplement that amount. So if we are holding the bag, so is the rest of the state.
Good chance the Supreme court reverses, the local appeals court could be a bit shy since we elect them and the teacher unions have a lot of clout in elections.
