The reality is that Roger and SDV are very close to agreement on this issue. Both are in favor of free trade.
Trump sold his tariffs, during the election season, as a great way to bring in revenue and other things that implied that permanent across the board tariffs are groovy. This is mainly what Roger and SFP argue against, and they are right.
SDV and company have the position that Trump was always playing 4D chess, and the tariffs are mainly a temporary weapon to get other nations to remove their unfair tariffs and bear their fair military burden. That does indeed seem to be the way this is working out.
SFP and Roger also point out that Trump bears some responsibility for the status quo ante that he is railing against. That might be true but is really irrelevant to the current situation.
I might be wrong, but if you’re going to put this question to both sides of this argument on this board, they would both answer in the affirmative:
Would it behoove the US to threaten, and temporarily use, tariffs to bully other nations into relieving the US of some of the burden of defending the free world and to force other nations to lower their tariffs against the US?
If I’m right that they would both answer ”Yes”, then why are they arguing? Because they started arguing a different proposition, which was the advisability of using more permanent tariffs to make ourselves more prosperous. And now that the question is changing they just can’t stop arguing.
Throughout this discussion I ignore the fact that some permanent tariffs are probably necessary to keep some critical industries in America.

I'm still trying to figure out who this guy is and how he wields so much power. I thought he was essentially a governor of a state.

Do a stand alone deal with Canada. I dont understand why that was so difficult. Its his deal. He now doesnt like it, thats fact.
It was a renegotiation of NAFTA, which included Mexico. Mexico has subsequently acted in bad faith, so he’ll treat them differently than Canada moving forward. Gave them the benefit of the doubt 5 years ago, he’s now updating it based on their behavior.

So why are countries dropping their tariffs and working out trade deals
You are a moron

That was dumb.
If youre going to redo it, just include Canada in the free trade section.
But he didnt. He wanted to make his own NAFTA and now he hates it.

Did you have to google that too?
So it didnt expire. Trump just decided it was a bad deal. Just like I suspected.

I told you to do some research on the timeline of that deal. It would help you stop asking dumb questions that are easily discoverable.

Ive already done 20x more than you, slick.
in two years, Trump will cry about the new deal he makes and tell you baws hes gonna save you from the mean Canadians again.
After all, Trump says under his agreement we were abused.

You think the deal would only last 2 years? Why would I need Google to realize your question was very very dumb?

No. Dumb dumb. Despite the deal Canada levied thousands of tariffs in 2022. Just like my very first post informed you.
Do a modicum of research.

Trump did the deal in 2020. Canada added tariffs in 2022 because they knew Biden would do nothing. Trump sees Canada do this nonsense and is putting a stop to it and you're big mad over it.

All evidence to the contrary, moron. You thought a deal would only be two years.

Why are you ignoring the fact that these tariffs Canada put on us were not part of the deal Trump struck with them in 2020?
