That island up at the top of the Strait would make an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" should we take it. It would be a big loss of face to the IRGC especially if it was known that we wouldn't give it back as long as the regime isn't changed.
The question is how to protect it from drones.

Our military has been talking about lasers for a long time now. I'm not an expert, but it seems like they'd be useful for that, if they work.

You really got to believe that Iran nuking US soil is credible (it isn't in my opinion) to make that price worth it.
I do believe a dirty bomb would be a credible threat.

There is probably some pimply-faced 15-year old kid living in his momma's basement somewhere in the midwest that could hack into Iran's drone control system and disable them all.

Is that island in artillery range from the mainland of Iran? Or the mountains?

You protect it by putting a large amount of air defenses on it. It’ll basically act as a sponge for most of the drones and missiles that would otherwise be intended for threatening shipping through the strait. Combine that with a large naval presence patrolling the strait we should be able to keep the sea lanes open for commercial traffic. And everytime Iran launches a drone or missile we’d have an opportunity to target its launch point.
It doesn’t appear that the civilians are going to rise up against the regime so this is probably the only way to salvage a “win” from this war.

Measured it on Google Earth Pro and it is well within artillery range of the Iran coast. However, American artillery would have a big advantage with Himars and Excalibur either one of which can put a shell down a chimney 40 miles away.
Drones are the concern as that's in drone range too.

What would we gain from taking an island that is doing nothing and putting people in harms way to keep a presence there.
We can stop their oil tankers in the ocean already.

We’d control the strait instead of Iran. It’s about everyone else’s oil tankers, not theirs.

Fair, but my point is to what end? Great, they dirty bomb a US city. What’s next? The end of Iran as a nation.

What do they do in the AF?

I really don't like this idea if the Islamic Republic is allowed to remain in power. I just have the feeling those "Gulf Allies" will just funnel it right back to Iran and the Mullahs.

You have to control the entire area to secure the strait, not just a few locations. As long as they can fire into the strait, doesn't matter where from, shopping will avoid it.

This is great and all but I think it is fair to state that this is also coming at a cost to the US domestic economy too. What is that number? It seems to be making another rate hike from the Fed a possibility.
The fed does not use fuel costs in core inflation calculations, because of temporary fluctuations.

Yes. That’s where the naval escorts come in. The islands will absorb a lot of the drones and missiles relieving pressure on the ships transiting the strait.

The islands won’t absorb it. IS troops on the islands will.
