Not to get too deep into this, but..
He kept repeating, “well maybe she just can’t hear US.”
And that other guy, to save them, jumped in and said, “I did see the phone and it definitely said mom.” Basically saying, “ok this isn’t working at all but I promise we aren’t TRYING to fake out the audience.”
Both point VERY heavily to nobody being able to hear the mom.
