How can any rational-thinking person claim it was spontaneous when there was a coordinated infantry assault and indirect fire (mortars)?
Do people really see no irony in stating that a coordinated attack arose spontaneously?
The individuals that believe this did not serve in the military as we did. They can't grasp what kind of planning it takes to conduct a precise strike as this group did on 9/11/12. If they had ANY tactical knowledge AT ALL; they would be much better informed.

Is anyone, liberal or conservative, surprised that the NY Times would come to this conclusion.
They needed something to change the topic from Obamacare.

Save your facts and logic. They won't listen.
The Obamabots are as fanatical as the most devoted of Adolf Hitler's followers.
Even while Berlin lay in flames and ruins, Der Fuhrer promised the German People that the Final Victory would belong to National Socialism . . . and the most ardent of his Nazi followers never stopped believing in their Fuhrer and his promises.
And so it goes today . . . with this new Fuhrer and his Obamabot followers . . .
Der Fuhrer hat immer recht. Obama said that a video triggered the spontaneous protest, and, the Leader is always right. . . no matter how much misery it causes . . . the leader is always right.
HEIL OBAMA ! DER FUHRER HAT IMMER RECHT !

"We're portrayed by Republicans as either being lying or idiots," said one Obama administration official who was part of the Benghazi response. "It's actually closer to us being idiots."

Were they al-Qaeda, al-Qaeda-influenced, or just independent terrorists? Since the US apparently hasn’t questioned all the terrorists involved, those trying to draw conclusions have to use theory and deduction. Some people who worked there tell me that “terrorist” ties are complex. They say that some Libyans now working with Americans have worked with al-Qaeda linked groups in the past but are now considered friends as far as the mission in Libya

Tactically, it wasn't a very complicated operation at all and probably could have been planned and executed in a couple of hours. About a platoon sized element of attackers, a couple of RPG teams, and a mortar team. Aside from the mortar team a platoon size element of fighters in Benghazi probably isn't to hard to come by.
Logistically, however, it would have been very difficult for Ansar al-Sharia to conduct this operation without at least several days of planning. We know they knew the location of the consulate, not really a big deal, they probably had informant in the local security force. But they also managed to get the location of the nearby CIA annex. Which IIRC is where the two former SEALs were killed.
Also, while getting your hands on a mortar and a few RPG's probably isn't a miraculous feat of logistics in war torn Libya, managing to get your hands on enough rounds to sustain an hours long assault AND getting trained mortartmen and people capable of adjusting mortar fire probably isn't so easy.
I guess theoretically it called have all been a perfect storm and the Islamic fighters got really lucky, but I doubt it.

Kirkpatrick is the NYT's unofficial "Muslim Brotherhood" correspondent. The MB's involvement in the events in Benghazi was very real, and Kirkpatrick had in place all the right connections to "create" the details of his story.
I realize I'm responding to my own post here, but in glancing through my files I just noticed this NYT story by David D. Kirkpatrick dated July 4, 2013, close to six months before the new article being discussed in this thread.
Opening sentence: "CAIRO — Sheik Mohamed Abu Sidra had watched in exasperation for months as President Mohamed Morsi and the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood bounced from one debilitating political battle to another."
LINK
And then, from this new Benghazi story:
"Sheikh Mohamed Abu Sidra, a member of Parliament from Benghazi close to many hard-line Islamists, who spent 22 years in Abu Salim, said, “Even in prison, he was always alone.”
He added: “He is sincere, but he is very ignorant, and I don’t think he is 100 percent mentally fit. I always ask myself, how did he become a leader?”
The writer went into this knowing where he was going to up ... supporting the Administration's position and rationalizing its response, or lack thereof, to a countless stream of questions.

I sincerely wish Fox News would send Sean Hannity to an early retirement home in Florida, as when one actually examines the day to day information coming from that network, while it is not unbiased, most of it is at least worthy of honest debate. While I personally am uncomfortable with a few of the Fox "personalities" that are popular with many on here, I don't view them as an "embarrassment" to the network, as Hannity is. Since the guy got bumped an hour later a couple of months ago, and his ratings dropped considerably, I swear some nights he looks to be on the edge of a complete meltdown. I have never heard his radio show, but from the amount of time he talks about it, all concerned might be better off if he stuck to that avenue.
Overall, especially during the daytime, they go out of their way to have one Republican and one Democrat, or one Conservative and one Liberal, to debate most issues in most segments. You don't see that on either MSNBC (obviously) and whereas at one time you did see some degree of "equal time" on CNN, with the takeover by Zucker a year ago, that practice has pretty much disappeared.
By the way, your disparagement of "conservatives" paints an overly broad brush. I consider my self "a conservative", but most on here see me as a "RINO". Labels are generally overused, particularly in political discussions. There is also a matter of geography. A "conservative" in Maine is not like a "conservative" in Texas. But a "liberal" in New York is the exact same as a "liberal" in California.
And there's the rub ...
Note: Though your post was not "addressed" to me, I have never "sheepishly followed" any political doctrine. I stay well-informed and make up my own mind regarding issues and politicians.

There is definitely a lot of "spin" in the piece, and it is more than misleading in the way many details are presented. It also has indefensible assumptions that show the writer has an agenda. But to say "there are no facts" is incorrect and it's not an op-ed piece by any definition of the term. We are on the same "side", it would appear, but in order to make compelling arguments that need to be made, it's always best to try to stick to accurate statements in assessing the "opposition" and its apologists and lackeys in the media.

No lie here.
It was a planned "Act of Terror" inspired by the video.
