WASHINGTON — Since the 2008 financial crisis, conservative economists and Republican politicians have claimed several policy errors were holding back economic growth and contributing to a painfully slow recovery, including lackluster wage growth. The government was spending too much, it was borrowing too much and it was sowing “uncertainty” in the business world with expiring tax cuts and other bitter policy battles, they said.

If Republican leaders still believe that, they’re not acting like it.

In a year of controlling power in Washington, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have run up federal spending, approved deficit-swelling tax cuts and presided over a marked increase in “policy uncertainty” in the economy. They still talk about the importance of fiscal discipline, but they have yet to enforce it.

The $4.4 trillion budget Mr. Trump released on Monday spends as much over 10 years as any budget offered by President Barack Obama, whose policies Republicans blamed for ballooning the size of the federal government and hobbling the economy. It does not attempt to achieve balance at the end of that time, despite optimistic economic growth projections that far exceed what most economists say is possible.

Instead, it projects that deficits will grow $7 trillion over the next decade as the United States continues borrowing huge sums of money — a number that could double if the administration turns out to be overestimating economic growth and if the $3 trillion in spending cuts the White House has floated do not materialize in Congress.

The promised $3 trillion in nonmilitary spending cuts do not appear to be high priorities for the president or Republican leaders. A key proposal for self-imposed fiscal restraint, the so-called “two penny plan” that would reduce nondefense discretionary spending by 2 percent a year, is a holdover from last year’s budget proposal. Americans have heard almost nothing about it from the White House in the intervening year. Mr. Trump has talked a bit more about his “welfare reform” ambitions to help cut federal costs but, again, has not mounted a serious pressure campaign to urge Congress to enact them.

NYY??

Is that New York Yankees?? If so, why would I care what a baseball team has to say about politics?

Yeah, I agree with the main point, but the alternative is a Democratic plan which would surely be worse, with tons of entitlements that never get rolled back. So, no choice but to swallow a Republican plan...

We could just start a mass movement for everyone to claim complete exemption from income tax on their W2s. Try finding tens of millions of 'delinquent' taxpayers, you parasites.

I wonder what percentage of the population knows that income tax was not always a thing in America, or even close to it.

Probably 15-20%, I would think. It's not really a good use of time for the average person to be a sperg about politics and history like us.

People that voted for Trump based on him being a Deficit Cutter: ZERO.

People amused that Democrats have suddenly Rediscovered Deficits: ERRYBODY.

Republican pols, with few exceptions, forgot about deficits a long time ago. Trump voters are pragmatic about deficits, they are far more focused on growing the economy than reducing the deficit. Principled deficit-hawks like Rand Paul and The Heritage Foundation guys are not likely to have much of a voice in 2018. After ten years of drunken sailor spending the vast majority of people are numb to it.

I would guess it will be a legitimate topic in the lead up to the 2020 election.

Unfortunately, only the minority party is the deficit hawks. Those in power never want to deal with making cuts. Cold hard fact.

We haven't cared about deficits once we started printing money instead of paying through taxation. Fiat currency allows for government to take on wild, expensive projects without the population feeling the pain of the cost.

You are absolutely right.

I support cutting every program by one percent for 10 years straight. Finding one penny every year should not be difficult.

I would be willing to bet if the minority party proposed specific cuts palatable to the majority, it would get done. Right now what we have is the minority saying DEFICITS as a way of trying to score political points, when everyone with a brain knows the votes for deep cuts don't exist in the senate as currently comprised.

NOT one single person in D.C. is willing to risk their career for doing what is actually right with out of control government spending.

I think over 75 members of Congress have been there over 20 years, yet the problems seem to exist. Why is that? If people are elected to fix problems and problems don't get fixed, then why do they continue to get re-elected?
