Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School is one of the highest performing schools in the area

#4 in math
#6 in science
90% of the students are low-income
The New York State Board of Regents just voted to close it

Feel bad for these kids
Now they will have to go back to the ghetto public school and probably have their life ruined

Two things.
1) This is an NPR, and even they’re expressing disdain for the decision.
2) The opposition was led by Dr. Collins. Let’s see a transcript from an NPR interview.
Eh?

2) The opposition was led by Dr. Collins. Let’s see a transcript from an NPR interview.
quote:
MACKIE: What is your response to the parents who are upset that a good charter school is being closed?
COLLINS: There are more than one charter school in the city of Buffalo. There's the public schools sitting there. There are parents who have children in their schools, in the charter schools and also in the Buffalo Public Schools. Please continue to do what you have to do as a parent, whatever that is, to educate your children. That's all I have to say is that as a parent, as a parent and as a former nurse who worked for the Buffalo school district years ago, do whatever you can to educate your children. The Buffalo Public School, the charter school, the Catholic schools, whatever schools out there, do whatever you have to do. I mean, I can't tell parents what do to but all I can say is support your children and make sure that they get a fine education wherever they are.
MACKIE: Well, I think that's the issue that the BuffSci parents are saying that, ‘we're actually very happy with the education that our students are getting at BuffSci and now that is being taken away from us.’
COLLINS: Okay. I understand. I think I've answered the question. Parents are responsible for making the decisions for their children. We give them, the district as well as the charter schools, they make the decision on where they want to send their kids. I can't make that for them. So, I think this is, you know, we should end this conversation right about now.

I just read the entire article and I still can't find any GOOD reason for shutting down the school.
The kids were learning, the school was in good financial shape and the parents were happy.
New Yorkers are some fricked up dumbasses.

fricking infuriating.
Goddamned teacher mafia.
None of them deserve to call themselves educators.

This is the shite leftists do. There are hardly any posts in this thread. Meanwhile they make OMB posts to distract from it.

Didn't Pedo Joe say something about educational opportunities for blacks?

It’s the triumph of the mediocre, over the competent.

They don’t need one. I live in conservative NW Florida and our local school board fought charter schools tooth and nail. Only strong state laws allowed them to survive here; if it was up to the local school district bureaucracy they’d all be closed. Worthless shits.

Which part? I grew up in Okaloosa and the public schools there rivaled the private schools in most places, I don't think we ever had any charters. I know Pensacola has some bad schools though

Have you been following the Baton Rouge/St. George stuff? It's basically that but with the school budget.
quote:
“All of us sat here and heard the report dealing with the budget, and all I heard was reduction in what we were requesting, and freezes,” Collins said. “We don’t know how much money we’re going to have to even approve the things that the public schools need. I think it would be irresponsible of us to approve and obligate these districts—the district, Buffalo, and I want to mention Rochester as well—to spend the kind of money that’s needed to support the charter schools as well as the public schools.”
Funny enough, the charter schools have students whose parents are also paying taxes.
quote:
That financial argument against charters is one CEO Anna Hall of the Northeast Charter Schools Network knows well. It’s also a key part of the national debate on charter schools.
“I think the concept of stealing implies ownership, and it implies that those funds are the rightful property of the district, where in fact they are the rightful property of the families and the children of Buffalo,” Hall said. “The district no more owns a child than they own those funds.”
tl;dr - it seems to boil down that, facing funding freezes/shortages, they don't want to expand or renew charter schools to save money for public schools instead. Apparently, it's fine to screw those charter school kids over.

Honestly, that's a totally ignorant argument from them. The money follows the child whether the child is in that charter school or in the public school. There really isn't any money to be gained for them here.

But the teachers love the kids to death....so much so that they are hindering them from receiving an education.
Posted on 5/25/20 at 11:47 pm to imjustafatkid
They want to eliminate the GOOD charter schools to raise the chances that the kids return to the plantation.
Not all charter schools are created equal, just like not all public schools are created equal.

Exactly.
I did like how the school administrator said "we give them", we give them, I didnt realize the school administrators were paying all the bills, foolish me thought it was the taxpayers.
This is reason number 7865 why no unions should be allowed in any govt job. When you can collectively bargain against voting for/hiring someone who will decide your compensation package, it leads to insane packages, and insane policies to protect those packages.

You simply cannot let the crabs climb out of the barrel, when this happens, something must be done to make certain that they stay inline and on the plantation...
