NY restaurants raising prices to cover minimum wage increase

Some New Yorkers are displeased with one of the more predictable outcomes of a $15 minimum wage—restaurants all over the city are raising their prices, according to the New York Post.
The city's minimum wage went up to $15 from $13 or $13.50 at the beginning of 2019, boosting the paychecks for numerous lower-wage workers.
"It's obnoxious—kind of a slap in the face," Starbucks patron Edward Beck told the Post. "Another increase, and I won't come back."
Restaurants are raising prices to adjust for the higher salaries they must pay workers. But, they're increasingly worried about discouraging customers with too-high prices.
"[Restaurants] feel they're getting to a point where the customer might reject the higher prices, choose a different way to eat out, or eat their own food," said Melissa Fleischut, president and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association.
Making matters worse, the minor increases NYC restaurants are implementing aren't totally making up for the higher minimum wage. Jon Bloostein, founder of a Manhattan chain restaurant, said there need to be more changes by businesses to afford the raise—but they were given very little time to adjust.
"It's too much too fast, said Jeremy Merrin, founder of the Havana Central restaurant in Times Square. "The shock of raising [the wage] at that rate in that short time—you just can't catch your breath."

so the min wage was already $13-13.50 and went to $15 and these places raised prices? How long was it $13 and where did it go up from there, and were prices raised at that point or what?
Posted on 2/18/19 at 2:49 pm to Crimson Wraith
Impossible. The libs said there was no way that would happen
Posted on 2/18/19 at 2:49 pm to Crimson Wraith
Nope, can't be. Progs told me it would come from billionaires own profits.
Posted on 2/18/19 at 2:51 pm to Crimson Wraith
Did anyone think this wouldn’t happen?

WTF....YES. That is a 15% increase in wages.
You just assumed that as long as we make "paltry $2.00 per hour increases" there will be NO consequences?
silliness

What? You mean if cost of labor goes up, the price of goods and services reflect that increase?

Just another example of good intentions coming from people who don't understand well anything including human nature.
Now myself, I believe I could make a very good case that the national wage is necessary and that it many areas it is too low . But that is a FAR cry from demanding $15 an hour AND taxing the frick out of those business owners as well.
The left needs somoene who at least somewhat rationale to step into a leadership role , and quickly.

Mandated wage increases also increases the amount of payroll taxes taken in as well unemployment taxes etc.
Govt. makes out too.
Govt. makes out too.

When operating costs go up, that increase inevitably gets passed on to the consumer. Business 101.

Minimum wage is set at the wrong place.
It’s too fricking high. There shouldn’t be a min wage, period.

That can't be right. It implies that Starbucks pays less than $15/hr in NY. SB pays $15 here in Bossier.
Now, they do keep raising prices but not for wages. They give medical benefits and online college tuition (which Schultz calls 'free college for everyone.')

I’m gonna take your word for it, Zach. You are, without a doubt, the board’s foremost authority on all things Starbucks.

You are wrong, but that's a discussion for another thread.
Suffice to say, stupidity like what you just posted is how stupidity like "the national minimum wage should be $15 an hour" is allowed to gain any traction.
Sadly though while the Republican largely rejects the ignorant the Democrats embrace it.

In 2013 it was $7.25, then increased to:
12-31-2013 - $8.00
12-31-2014 - $8.75
12-31-2015 - $9.00
12-31-2016 - $11.00 ($10.50 if 10 or fewer employees)
12-31-2017 - $13.00 ($12.00 if 10 or fewer employees)
12-31-2018 - $15.00 ($13.00 if 10 or fewer employees)
12-31-2019 - $15.00 for all NYC employers
So they basically raised the minimum wage by 67% over 3 years and thought small businesses with 10-20 employees were just going to be able to absorb that kind of increased payroll cost without charging more
