When politicians run out of good arguments, their last refuge is often the claim that what they want is "necessary for national defense." Given that there are no economic arguments in favor of tariffs, it makes sense that the administration has resorted to the political "national defense" argument instead. So, even if the Trump administration were forced to admit that, yes, tariffs are bad for the incomes and standards of living for most Americans, they could still argue that everyone must make sacrifices for the sake of national security. But do these arguments hold any water?

Just emotional appeals. Kind of like calling everyone racist.

You can't argue against national security, can ya?

If I could think of a recipe for inflation it would include putting more cash into the economy via tax cuts, a tight labor market and increased consumer prices through trade wars initiated by tariffs.

Should the fed try to raise interest rates in an effort to combat inflation, what would that do to our enormous debt?

I'm betting the fed wouldn't raise interest rates, and we'd inflate our way out of the debt.

If economists = deep state....

Tariffs are a political solution to a real world issue. Political solutions almost always involve emotion over reality. Usually what works politically doesn't work very well economically.

Free Trade is one of the pillars of capitalism. Trump is leading us back toward some kind of 18th century mercantilism.

When did the DOD become a group of expert economists?

Oh, when their contractors’ wallets might get lighter.

Riiiiight.

I love all these people smarter than trump with brilliant schemes on how to run the world. I highly recommend you fools run for office and make your pitch. Until then, POTUS will handle the economic strategy from here

Take a look at the tariffs the EU imposes on countries not part of their free trade agreement. One would think the left would love anything to make us more like Europe.

And as for libertarians, lol. They are crazier than the left (private ownership of roads and other such ridiculousness).

Roger can't say anything negative about any conservative or Trump decision without inserting his whataboutism.

Every time damn time.

Yeah, tariffs are crony-capitalistic which is definitely a trait of the DC swamp creature.

I am reserving judgment thus far in hopes that trriffs are being used as a tool and not a solution.

We should listen to the Pentagon about destroying our enemies, not trade!

It is a possibility, particularly with Trump. It could just be a bargaining chip.

You're such a whiny bitch.

Your problem is you're not intelligent enough to pick up the reasoning. That was laid out for a reason.

I don't have to be smarter, but I listen to people who are a lot smarter than Trump.
