NHL's 'Blackhawks': Name Won't Change
LINK
The NHL's Chicago Blackhawks said on Tuesday they will not change their name or logo despite growing pressure on U.S. sports teams with Native American names and symbols to do so amid a push to eliminate racially insensitive material.
The team said in a statement to the Chicago Sun-Times that the name celebrated the life of Black Hawk of Illinois' Sac & Fox Nation, and that it would work to further raise awareness about Native American culture.
The announcement comes after the NFL's Washington Redskins and MLB's Cleveland Indians said last week they would consider changing their names.

Chicago is NOT a lost cause.

Saying you won’t be doing what someone wants is a good way to get even more attention you don’t want. They probably should have just let it sizzle out on its own if this is the end goal they wanted.

Their fans weren't exactly on board with this.

I might order a jersey just to throw some revenue their way.

There is nothing disrespectful about the word "Blackhawk" or its historical origins. The club did the right thing.

That doesn't stop modern progressives. Totalitarianism is the air they breathe. Cultural marxism is their religion.

Black Hawk is honoring a real person. It isn't a slur like "redskins".
Why would they need to change it?
Why would they need to change it?

I posted this in the MSB thread,
I don’t have a hockey team, but I just became a fan

Nor should they. "Redskins" is a racial epithet; "Blackhawks" is not.

Why would the KC Chiefs or FSU Seminoles need to be changed?

It's not changing.
Here's the full statment:
quote:
‘‘The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois’ Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public,’’ the Hawks’ statement said.
‘‘We celebrate Black Hawk’s legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team’s popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations.
‘‘We recognize there is a fine line between respect and disrespect, and we commend other teams for their willingness to engage in that conversation.
‘‘Moving forward, we are committed to raising the bar even higher to expand awareness of Black Hawk and the important contributions of all Native American people.
‘‘We will continue to serve as stewards of our name and identity and will do so with a commitment to evolve. Our endeavors in this area have been sincere and multifaceted, and the path forward will draw on that experience to grow as an organization and expand our efforts.’’
The Hawks are a very well run organization (aside from recent personnel moves), and they have one of the greatest sweaters in hockey and greatest logos in sports. So I sincerely hope this passes over. And I for one would love to hear and see more content about Black Hawk and who he was and who that logo is based upon. Would be fricking awesome.
