This week Tom Marquardt, the paper's retired former publisher, said he talked with the newspaper's attorneys about seeking a restraining order in 2013, but didn't because he and others thought it could provoke Ramos into something worse. "We decided to take the course of laying low," Marquardt said Friday.

Tragic example of the pussification of America. NEVER let a Predator stay on the prowl. Kill it, maim it, dissuade it from coming close. Don't wait to hide under a desk and see if you can survive or not.

Sad, truly sad.

Sounds like they did the right thing given what happened.

A restraining order does nothing to prevent someone who doesn’t care and can provoke them instead.

He's got a point. A restraining order won't stop this guy from going off and killing people. People break those orders all the time.

You can't quantify how many incidents have been prevented because of a restraining order. As for provoking someone, the person was already less than rational.

Waiting to be a victim is no way to live and a good way to get hurt.

They should at least have had well trained armed security. For you former vets LEO's and SF types out there security might be a good field to look into, some high end firms school boards etc will be spending some money in the near future.

This. If an individual has previously expressed a desire to do bodily harm to employees at your business, I believe you are duty bound to provide ample security to prevent an incident from taking place.

Still no guarantee it will stop a dedicated madman but it's an effort that makes sense.

Restraining orders will work if the individual under the order is at least rational. probably would not have made a difference in this case.

Yea, I'm sure a restraining order would have stopped this...

Well IDK what yall are talking about, but if Gun Free Zone signs clearly have stopped a number of shootings then a piece of paper can too!

We are too civilized to protect ourselves from each other. The advantage is to the uncivilized among us who are willing to suffer the ultimate penalty in order to taste their revenge. They have the advantage of creeping upon us any time of the day or night to inflict their sense of justice. We can only wait, hoping to be prepared and awake when it happens. Advantage unruly! Our lawful way of living states, "unless one is being threatened with immediate and substantial threat of harm, may one use deadly force to protect ourselves." Our ancestors lived the lives of being wiped out by criminal neighbors, waiting for the 2AM attack while asleep. The only defense was to hit them first. That was in the wild west, with no law. Now we have laws, and can't hit them first. So we cower and wait. I would say pray, but that seems to be out of favor these days.

Better than a restraining order would be to have the state make murder illegal.

Laws are restraining orders too.

A restraining order wouldn’t.

Publicly saying someone there was armed would have.

The guy hid as soon as the police came. He would not have attacked an armed building.

The restraining order was mentioned by the publisher. Nobody here said it was the solution

That's asinine. If you believe gun free zones and banning guns won't prevent shootings, you surely can't believe a restraining order would?

This is what happens when you're not a proponent of the 2A. Could have very well been prevented if the shooter knew ahead of time that 2 or 3 people at the paper were carrying. Hell, good chance it wouldn't have happened at all because undoubtedly the guy wasn't on a suicide mission, just a killing spree.

I don’t see how a restraining order could have prevented this. Murder is illegal, that didn’t stop him.

I would love to know how a restraining order would have stopped this? That seems to be posting you're taking by posting what the publisher said, followed by your comments?
