That would have worked the same as gun free zones at schools do

A restraining order is about as effective as a gun ban. Its not going to stop the determined.

We are too civilized to protect ourselves from each other. The advantage is to the uncivilized among us who are willing to suffer the ultimate penalty in order to taste their revenge. They have the advantage of creeping upon us any time of the day or night to inflict their sense of justice. We can only wait, hoping to be prepared and awake when it happens. Advantage unruly! Our lawful way of living states, "unless one is being threatened with immediate and substantial threat of harm, may one use deadly force to protect ourselves." Our ancestors lived the lives of being wiped out by criminal neighbors, waiting for the 2AM attack while asleep. The only defense was to hit them first. That was in the wild west, with no law. Now we have laws, and can't hit them first. So we cower and wait. I would say pray, but that seems to be out of favor these days.

Nonsensical hysterics.

We live in the most peaceful point in human history. Tribal warfare, as you described, resulted in exponentially more deaths per capita than we have now.

I hate to call you people fricking stupid, but many here are simply fricking stupid.

Would a restraining order by itself stop this person? Who knows.
Would shining a public light on his aberrant behavior stopped this person? Maybe.
Obviously doing nothing didn't work out too well. In fact, doing nothing, then hiding under the desk was the plan of some of those that survived. Had the police not arrived in 60 seconds more would have died as the sheep would have waited to be slaughtered.
Obviously an armed guard could have made a difference. Obviously someone armed in the newsroom could have made a major difference.
Fact is the paper chose to do NOTHING and 5 people were gunned down?
At least a restraining order would have shined a light on this a-hole. Maybe a family member or friend would have intervened? Maybe simply being more aware of the threat by the victims could have saved lives. Doing NOTHING didn't do anything other than create a killing field.

So, would a Restraining Order alone saved these lives? Nobody...including you stupid asses bloviating about it here actually knows.

Wow, I feel better. How about you?

I don't think you know how restraining orders work

The newspaper should have hired armed security for their office. It is that simple. They didn’t do it because they hate guns and anyone who has a gun. The individuals should have armed themselves also. Very sad tragic situation that could have been prevented. You can not hide your head in the sand and think a problem like this is going to go away.

What part of being processed in the system IS NOT potentially shining a light on an individual?

Please though, tell me how doing NOTHING is so much better than obtaining a Restraining Order? The police report from 2013 clearly stated that the paper chose not to pursue any action for fear of creating a larger reaction.

Still, five years later BOOM.

It wouldn't have, just like stricter gun control laws wouldn't have.

When asking that question you have to remind yourself that this was an individual willing to commit mass murder.

A sane and rational person wanting to avoid confrontation with law enforcement will honor a restraining order. Ramos was neither.

Sure, a court order is something and, it's easy to say something is better than nothing, but in this case it highly likely the same result would have occurred.

Shine a light to whom? The general public? Law enforcement? Because neither of these groups know when someone is placed under a restraining order.

It’s just as effective as any gun control proposal the left has made in recent memory.

At some point, people need to get off of their asses and take self protective measures. The dyslexia generation don’t play.
