Article does not explain why it was "illegally owned" but looking up New York gun laws, you must register all hand guns, so guessing it was not registered

Same here in MPLS, if you shoot burglar you can go to jail for a long time, no need to keep a gun at my house—> passive aggressive way to take your gun away

he may have a chance in upstate NY with the right jury
NY City and Upstate are different places
I guess New York City is to New York as California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, etc. is to the United States? Just another great reason to escape from those states and live somewhere else.

They were robbing him. So, I think he’s good there.

WTF... they were inside his home, that seems to be a pretty big threat.

Yes, you do. If they are in your home, they are a threat.

You going to stop them and ask them? How do you know they pose no threat? Break into my house, you will get shot. It's that simple.

Good news, unfortunately this being New York they will put the poor guy away for longer than they would have the perps...even if they had killed him.

Upon reading local news, it appears that this may not be as cut and dried as Fox News made it. It’s not clear that the people shot were inside the home. They also rang the doorbell. More details to come, I’m sure.

so did the homeowner knowingly possess an illegal firearm or not?

I'm sure he knew. Didn't care.

The notion of needing a permit to keep a weapon in your own home seems silly, but it is the law, and NY has lots of silly laws. If you do not like them, live elsewhere.
The permits are not difficult to obtain or maintain. It seems that in most places in NY and outside NYC, the fee for a permit is about $200 every five years and that the permits are not difficult to obtain. Basically, you cannot be a felon.
Do we know why this homeowner did not maintain such a permit?

I don't disagree with you. He should have had it registered. I will say this though, if I was in a similar situation, I wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing.

Two important points:
1) you can own guns legally in New York
2) Of the 50 states, New York has the third-lowest rate of gun violence.
Luckily this man was not hurt, and fortunately he will be taken to task over irresponsible gun ownership. This thread in no way fits the narrative that Polibaws want it to.

If Texas passed a law making it illegal to miss a belt loop on my jeans, I would probably not know about it.

Better than being seriously injured or killed. Would it have happened, we'll never know. What would you do in that situation? "Sorry, my gun isn't legal, will you guys please go back outside"? Don't forget, I said in this situation.

WTF?
I guess he should have interrupted the looting of his house, and asked if they had intentions to hurt him first.
