American voters by a 2-to-1 margin favor tougher gun control rules following the massacre of 17 people at a Florida high school last week, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Sixty-six percent of voters support stricter gun laws, compared with 31 percent who do not, the Quinnipiac University poll found. Backing for tighter gun rules is higher than the polling institute has ever measured, and up from 47 percent as recently as December 2015.

Ninety-seven percent of voters back universal background checks, versus only 2 percent who do not, according to the Quinnipiac poll. The percentage of voters supporting the policy rose from 95 percent in December.

Sixty-seven percent of voters support a nationwide ban on assault weapons, versus 29 percent who oppose it, the survey found. In November, 65 percent of voters backed an assault weapons ban. Multiple mass shooters in recent years have used semiautomatic rifles like the AR-15.

In addition, 67 percent of respondents said it was too easy to buy a gun in the U.S., the poll said. Three percent responded that it was too difficult, while 25 percent said the difficulty of getting a gun is about right.

I wonder if the graph below concerns the NRA. Or are they laughing it off?

In California, a majority of voters voted against gay marriage.

How did that end?

We do not abolish Constitutional Rights just because some made up poll says so.

This might have worried me more if Trump didn't put Gorsuch in the SCOTUS.

So if polls turn and the majority of Americans are against gay marriage, can we take away married gay couples marriage license?

Was it an either OR question shitbag.

Do you support tougher gun laws or less restrictive gun laws. This is the kind of shite you post.

The gay marriage fight is a good comparison to this. American's attitudes toward gay marriage went through a seismic shift within a few very short years. Prop 8 was voted on in 2008. Yet just four years later it won on every state ballot where it was voted on in 2012. No doubt Cali would have legalized also if it had been held a few years later. They were the first ones however and were a few years too soon.

It's a good thing the Constitution doesn't change with public opinion. It needs a process to be followed first.

If you are concerned about the government taking you off to some camp, you should be pro-2A

I wouldn't be surprised if the trend is real. And I'm glad Trump is signaling he's open. Republicans don't want to be on the wrong side of the voters here with the momentum he's gained. This s issue could easily reverse it if Republicans appear tone deaf to the issue.

No it’s not, that is dumb. Gay marriage wasn’t a right that someone else was trying to take away, they were trying to grant the right to marriage. You and your leftist girlfriends are trying to take rights away from law abiding citizens

Try again

Toddy, just know that wherever you are, if someone ever comes to throw gays off buildings, I'll use my guns to try and stop them.

Gorsuch was simply a replacement for Scalia. He hasn't tilted the court any more than it was.

The majority still are ... just afraid to say so.

If they thought it'd make a difference and get rid of our degenerate abomination ... they'd speak up.

Anyone with common sense and decency is disgusted by the ridiculous notion of two dudes being married.

Do not confuse tolerance with acceptance.

Answer the question. If public opinion changes against gay marriage, do we have the right to take away marriage licenses from gay couples?

So this matters why?

Let me know when we start having popular votes on constitutional changes. Which will be never.
