"U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins said a new Interstate 10-Calcasieu River bridge could break ground by 2021, adding that an environmental impact statement should be finished next month."

"Higgins said he isn't completely against tolls. However, he doesn't support "current ideas" on tolls for the new bridge. He said a stipulation should be set up so local residents wouldn't have to pay them."

"(If) you live within 100 miles of the bridge, when you get your vehicle registration, you get a speed pass," Higgins said. "That would erase local concerns from folks who cross the bridge here every day."

100 miles of the bridge,

50 makes more sense.

At 100 miles, people in Lafayette would not have to pay the toll.

Solid article. Thanks for posting. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a new bridge, toll or no toll and I cross that bridge twice daily at a minimum.

“The people who use the bridge the most shouldn’t have to pay for it”

Typical statist logic.

Yakupzack says the best method to getting this project off the ground is through a private investors.

“In our discussions with experts, we learned that private ventures could quickly work through and develop a design and construct a bridge in a relatively short time period.” JAN 2019
Public-Private Partnerships make perfect sense. The private entity(s) WILL make a profit. Therein lies the problem. Everything is OK with paying tolls at a pre-determined amount but the minute the general public realizes that part of the pre-approved tolls winds up in somebody's pocket (legally, contractually, and above board in return for building and maintaining the bridge), all bets are off. Louisiana's citizenry - in general - has a child-like cognitive process. There's your biggest impediment to getting it done.

Is it is legal to put a toll on an interstate? If so, it would seem that more communities or states would do so in order to raise funds.

After extensive debate, Congress decided in 1956 to authorize the BPR to incorporate toll facilities in the Interstate System to ensure connectivity without added expense.

"On August 21, 1957, the BPR announced that it had added 2,100 miles of toll roads in 15 States to the Interstate System."

Yes. Off the top of my head, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts all have tolled interstates

Yet we have the bridge to nowhere- Audubon bridge St. Francisville, La. Louisiana statists and the electorate who give them power are so fricking stupid.

They not dare throw a toll on that bridge because the 100 people who use it would drop to 10.

as someone who works for a company who has the capacity to build a bridge this big, there is zero chances it will start construction in 2021. I have not heard of any plans for that state to release ITB's let alone the design it would take to get this thing going. LADOTD surely will not design it, they can't get the drawings correct on a 70' single span steel bridge.

Why would locals need a waiver if 210 is an option?

Delaware also.

I believe there's a toll on I-95 at the Tydings Bridge over the Susquehanna (at least there used to be)

Starting in 2021 is optimistic . More like 2025, suspect construction time 4-5 years

This is so dumb, it takes 4 extra minutes to go 210 instead of I-10 if you're just going through Lake Charles. Haven't the 210 commuters been through enough?!?

Also, it's very easy to set a GPS to 'avoid tolls'.

This is why the government shouldn’t own the Interstate.
