The takes on twitter are hilarious. Lots of socialists claiming the GOP only supports wealth redistribution when it’s mainly black athletes

The bottom line on this story is Kemp just needs to put a D behind his name. This is a socialist idea and socialist policy. The irony is that all the hard core libs are all for wealth redistribution but for whatever reason they don’t like it here. Just a weird law for a Republican to propose

Well, first, their income should offset the school’s cost in providing them their education and all their other costs.
uh... how much money do you think those athletes that would garner endorsements already bring to the school through their athletic endeavors?

It's a billion dollar industry. There's nothing to offset

Uh... what?
What was the operating expenses of Tennessee football last year for the student/athletes’ cost of attendance?

I can agree with this. First off, if you are working for a technology company, you can't have a side gig banking off your employment. The employer owns everything derived from that employment except as may be agreed to in writing.

I think universities are going to have to protect the economic interests of their program and consider the ramifications on the team if there is one member earning bank and the others, who helped support him on the team, get nothing.

Ridiculous that the law stipulates the school can take any of the money. But that's besides the point.

Hold on now....the claim that athletes deserve $ because schools make money off of them also cuts the other way. The athletes wouldn't have those endorsement opportunities without the program that brought them in. The school has just as much of a right to their cut of the athlete's money as the athlete has to the schools money.

I personally think scholarships should not be allowed for any athlete receiving endorsement money. They can pay their own way and give the scholarship money to kids actually looking for an education.

I didn’t say they’re losing money (though many schools are losing money to athletics). They have expenditures. Why should they pay out before covering their expenses?

Their expenses are covered. They make money on those athletes. They aren't losing money after paying the costs of board, tuition and stipends - not for the athletes that would be garnering endorsements. Sure some athletic programs lose money, but those programs don't have any athletes that anyone would endorse. They would be taking money from prominent athletes; athletes who are already making the schools a lot of money. Think Devin White

That sounds like a "taking" under the Constitution but I would have to look at the enactment. Also, a student never really has to disclose anything. Of course, a school could have the choice to offset the amount against tuition or something. But why would a school do that? The school that doesn't do that would have the upper hand.

Furthermore, the NCAA is so far behind on this every state is going to have their own way of doing things.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if this than makes the player an employee, and they should be giving them pay and benefits.

Why would the school have a "right" to someone else's money?

Well, any school can do that, if they choose. What they shouldn't be doing is colluding with other schools and the NCAA to stop interstate commerce.

No school has to give a scholarship for anything, generally speaking.

I would have to see the enactment to have further opinion, but it sounds pretty stupid on the surface.

I am hoping one day mass amounts of NCAA and college officials go to jail over all this nonsense.

They're not stupid.... criminal maybe.
