New Georgia law legalizing college athlete endorsements also allows schools to take athletes' money

LINK

quote:

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed a bill into law allowing college athletes in the state to make endorsement money starting on July 1

The new law also allows schools to take up to 75% of an athlete’s endorsement income and redistribute to other athletes

quote:

The bill that Kemp signed into law allows schools across the state to take up to 75% of an athlete's endorsement income. That cut would be deposited into a pool for all athletes at the school and then redistributed upon athletes' graduation.

The Georgia GOP is a joke at this point

Sounds a bit like Communism.

eta: They'll probably tax the endorsements at 25% so the athlete earning the endorsement pays the tax while all of the money goes into the pool for everyone else.

First, who gets to decide how much each of these other athletes get?

Second, I'm sure this will do wonders for UGA football recruiting.

UGA compliance is already reporting they won’t take any money from them

Well, first, their income should offset the school’s cost in providing them their education and all their other costs.

Logically speaking, colleges that want to attract the highest talent are going to have to drastically cut that 75% number down to sub 10%.

Ridiculous that the law stipulates the school can take any of the money. But that's besides the point.

I mean I don’t know why they would immediately come out with it if they didn’t plan on following through.

I’m all for this. If we’re going to dispense with illusions that these guys are students, then throw in some “redistribution of the wealth “ that they seem to love otherwise.

It’s a first step from $0 and everything being owned by the U to 25% to the athlete and the rest going to his teammates...maybe for the collective nature of the game? It’s a start.

Exactly. Bureaucrats always do as much as you allow them to get away with and none of them can refuse free money.

Why does the federal government need to be involved? NCAA realizing they don’t hold as much power as they think. Those SEC schools are about to make bank. Keeping 25% of endorsement money in Georgia is better than making no money at another school.

quote:

The NCAA has asked the federal government to provide a nationwide framework for athlete endorsements though no federal law governing athletes' image rights is imminent.

The NCAA wants a federal law in lieu of myriad state laws that it would have to navigate. But those state laws have popped up because of the NCAA's continued procrastination regarding athlete endorsements. While the NCAA has said that it wants to modernize its current rules, it hasn't offered much in the way of specifics and it delayed a January vote on NIL changes.

Good lesson for kids, be careful what you ask for.

Everyone is "entitled" to the same prize.

You act like 25% is worse than zero.
