Well TEEEECHNICALLYYYYYYYY

most existing nukes are airburst and don't deliver nearly as much radioactive fallout as a surface nuke - which are typically reserved for hard targets.

In a nuclear exchange with mostly airburst nukes, which is what a 2022 nuclear exchange would be - humanity would survive - we certainly wouldn't go back to the stone age as Einstein once suggested.

A burst at 0.8km means, basically, no fallout.

And yes, NDT sucks, but TEEEEECHNICALLYYYY he's not entirely wrong here.

Nukemap - simulate nuclear explosions

Nukemap is pretty accurate.

Thank God tactical nukes are nothing to worry about! Now, let's talk about cow farts.

aren't hydrogen bombs set off by fission?

Initially, yes, and then fusion takes over which both dramatically increases the potency of the reaction and removes any potential "ceiling" effect in terms of energy released. In other words, there is no hard limit on the power of fusion bombs outside of running out of uranium, plutonium or lithium (hydrogen is obviously not an issue).

what the frick is this dude even babbling on about?

He isn't babbling, although I can see why many would think this. He tends to speak in absolutes, which is a problem I think people rightfully have with Tyson. Radioactive fallout is still obviously a byproduct of fission/fusion devices but Tyson's argument stems erroneously on a perceived air burst activation, and even then, he should have qualified his fallout comment with "much less" rather than an easily perceived "not a problem" (I think that's what he said but I forget his precise wording).

I believe the commenter above me deals with this satisfactorily, but to add to his point, there is no absolute guarantee a nuclear warhead would be detonated above ground. The explosion radius is much larger with an air burst and the ground damage would be significantly greater, as would the initial casualty rate, but if the attacker wanted to inflict a lot of post-acute harm, there's no reason to think they wouldn't detonate the warhead closer to the ground. Sadistic but entirely possible.

"Eratosthenes had heard that in Syene, a city south of Alexandria, no vertical shadows were cast at noon on the summer solstice. The sun was directly overhead. He wondered if this were also true in Alexandria.

So, on June 21 he planted a stick directly in the ground and waited to see if a shadow would be cast at noon. It turns out there was one. And it measured about 7 degrees."

NDT is a dumbass, a fission bomb is part of a fusion bomb, it's takes one to to start the fusion reaction, there's plenty of fallout.

Love him or hate him, NdGT is no dumbass.

Most of the fallout with an airburst is quickly dispersed back into the ground zero region. Sure, if you're roughly under the area of impact and manage to survive the initial fireball and shockwave, it's an issue, but it isn't an apocalyptic scenario for people outside of that area as many people believe.

Scientifically speaking, thermonuclear devices don't generate much in the way of fallout from the device itself. It is normally the (now) irradiated dirt and dust that gets kicked up and then elevated into the mushroom cloud that constitutes the "fallout" hazard with which most of us are familiar.

He's smart but usually people attribute superhuman intelligence to experts in one field who are also celebrities.

Noam Chomsky has been heralded for years about his political takes yet he's a linguistics professor. He has stupid takes about politics all the time.

Same effect good-looking people have on the people around them. Good-looking people get the benefit of the doubt in jobs and friendships, everything.

As usual he is full of shite.

An H2 bomb uses a fission bomb to generate enough pressure and heat to start fusion.

If you airburst a nuke high enough you get almost no lasting fallout, but as soon as soil/dust is involved it didn't matter if it's old or new, the dust is irradiated and spreads around.

No.

While fallout exists in a neutron bomb, it is reduced compared to standard nukes.

But the killing mechanism isn’t from it. It’s from not containing the neutrons generated by initial detonation.
