I think I have come to realize what this is all about. It is simply to encourage true patriots to leave or not join the military.
Could you imagine someone like Chris Kyle or Marcus Luttrell or Mike Murphy or General Patton partaking in a pride hike and waving that flag? Of course not, and that is why they are doing it, they don't want their types.

It is probably a tactic, like you say, to encourage Patriots to leave the armed forces. The only reason I can think they would want that is to mitigate any defections if they were to be ordered to do something heinous against US citizens or specifically patriots. Blue haired mentality ill folks take no issue with such orders.

When I was a member of US Army the Navy was sometimes referred to as Pier Queers.
Admittedly, that is a broad brush and there are many fine fighting men/women in the Navy. However the nickname now appears confirmed.
