“’For the first time, Finland will participate as a NATO member nation in exercising collective defense of the alliance’s regions’, the Finnish Defense Forces said in a statement.

Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer (830-mile) border with Russia, joined NATO in April 2023 in a historic move following decades of military non-alignment. With its bid now ratified by all NATO members, neighboring Sweden is currently finalizing formalities to enter the military alliance as its 32nd member — most likely in March.

Both Sweden and Finland had developed strong ties with NATO after the end of the Cold War, but public opinion remained firmly against full membership until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

There are definitely those within the MIC who are pushing hard for a war between Russia and the West, especially now that they see how much trouble Russia is having with Ukraine.

Hasn't NATO been running Cold Response annually for a long time?

This isn't really some new provocation.

Not a new thing, no.

But having this right on the border of Russia at a time when NATO is fricking with them? Not a great idea.

If we're going there, that describes pretty much every exercise NATO has held in its existence.

Well, if they are not willing to use nukes, then what's the purpose? Because Russia sure will.

Trump should say straight up that Europe/NATO is on their own if they provoke a war with Putin/"White Nationalist" Russia over a disputed former Russian Territory.

Idiots or worse.

Not all along the Russo-Finnish border.

Add to that the fact that Finland just joined NATO last year.

I thought this was limited to the far north and the region where Norway, Sweden, and Finland come together, but maybe I'm wrong.

n Norway, most of the activity will be from Bjerkvik and inner Troms, extending northeast to Alta and Central Finnmark. Additionally, there will be significant activity in the sea areas off Troms and Finnmark.

If you look at a map of those places, they are well away from Norway's border with Russia, and nowhere near Finland's.

I'd agree that an exercise all along an 800 mile border would be unwise at the moment.

Why don’t people learn from history? You’re not defeating Russia in a war by challenging them on their own territory

The purpose is to be able to crash across the Finnish border and sever communications and supply lines between Moscow and the Cola Peninsula, which is where much of Russia’s nuclear arsenal is based from. The hope is that NATO could effectively remove Russia’s ability to activate their nuclear arsenal eliminating any capacity for Russia to nuke the West. With nukes off the table, NATO forces besiege Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg as they prepare to attempt to overthrow the government in Moscow.

This is a stupid risky game they’re playing.
