Came to NASA in 1964 - had been working in St. Louis with McDonnell Aircraft on Mercury/Gemini since '61. Worked primarily with mission simulations wrt crew training for rendezvous operations. Never involved with propulsions systems or launch/reentry operations.
All good natured, dedicated, intelligent people back then.

Story might or might not be true but top level engineers aren’t as you describe in any org. Not even google.
