Remember Strom Thurmond? Or James Eastland, Richard Russell, Harry Byrd, J Wm. Fulbright, John Stennis, John Sparkman, Allen Ellender? No, I didn't think so. But all of them were Jim Crow Dixiecrat senators who exalted segregation and discrimination, and held up passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 voting rights legislation which ended the unconstitutional poll tax and grandfather clauses enforced in the South at the time.
It's noteworthy that Strom Thurmond, who had earned 39 EVs and carried 4 states back in 1948, became a Republican soon after the passage of the civil rights statutes. The Dixiecrat party, built on Jim Crow, became the core of the modern Republican party in the South-- and today Republicans make up the overwhelming majority of the Senate bloc in the South (Hooray to Georgia for being a firewall).

There's no "acid" involved there. The statement as written is actually true, in spite of conservative Southern Republicans' attempt to deny. Many (but not all) conservative white Southern Democrats who were segregationists ("Dixiecrats") went Republican after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, led by Strom Thurmond -- that's a fact. Of course there were stragglers like Louisiana's John Rarick and Georgia's Lester Mattox who remained Democrats, but they were increasingly isolated within that party.
