Where does the constitution say we should have so much federal land?

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a lot of hunter and angler groups agree with him.

I'm sure Bunkie Municipal Park is not that impressive. But ask New Yorkers what they think of Central Park. Or Grant Park in Chicago. Or Yellowstone or Yosemite or the Grand Canyon. Or any of the national monuments like the Statue of Liberty.

'No federal or state land' is one of those ideas like 'lets privatize the police force'...they only come from fools who try to apply some sort of overarching political paradigm to everything in life. The adults in the room realize it doesn't work that way.

Also for libertarians: When and where has libertarian-ism been successfully implemented? Since you want to implement it in the U.S. (arguably the most powerful or 2nd most powerful nation state in the history of the world) we might want to see how it's worked in other instances before we try it.

Its in the powers of eminent domain, whereby the federal govt with legislative action can obtain real estate as long as it promotes the general welfare and the private owners are fairly compensated. Now, I don't think that all the federal land promotes the general welfare, however, using the example in the OP, with Glacier Nat Park, certainly meets that criteria.

Watch your mouth! Bunkie Municipal Park is breath-taking. It's the home of the Corn Festival for Christ's sake.

Protect the environment from what? Evil Man??? Are you kidding me? The whole green thing is total fabrication from UN Agenda 21. Look up the biggest left leaning lib, lesbo on earth... Rosa Koire... She is even fighting the UN Green Agenda... She has exposed it all over for what it is... Also read and watch anything done by Lord Christopher Moncton who chased Al Gore off the stage when he started hitting him with facts... GORE in "Inconvenient load of BS" film that somehow won him the Nobel Peace Prize, "The polar ice cap will be completely gone by 2014." The latest report is the ice cap is 40% larger than when Gore made that doomsday prediction.

While I'm not quite as radical as this, I do feel if the gov't isn't using it for a certain purpose it should be open to settlement under some kind of homestead program

And if you're Clive Bundy it should be 100% free to settle anywhere you like on any government land and to use all the resources you can take.

This is where I deviate from my ideology. I prefer to set aside some wild places and keep them that way, and allow everyone to enjoy them. I'd prefer land trusts but that doesn't seem to be a reality here so I accept the status quo. I'm involved with some conservation groups and have participated in advisory groups for the Tongass N.F. multi use plan. My biggest beef with the Feds is that they are inflexible assholes who strong arm their way through every process and have become militant when it comes to enforcement

...and their rules about motorboats and 4-wheelers on NWRs is a bit ridiculous.

One can only imagine what Disney could come up with for Yellowstone

You may not be aware of the havoc the government has wrought in Yellowstone, by way of tinkering with the ecosystems and manipulating the flora and fauna. It's ALWAYS done in the name of preserving the "wild" for Americans, and the unintended consequences lead to new problems almost every time. The cutthroat vs lake trout debacle is a famous example. LINK

There is absolutely no reason to assume the private sector (or even Walt Disney himself) would have done a worse job.

Yes, the national parks (and Yellowstone in particular), are treasures and should be protected and preserved for the greater good, but don't be so quick to give the government credit for doing it well. It was a lot of rich capitalists that made it happen in the first place.

That shite would be sold with the quickness.

I am a small-government conservative that wants to legalize marijuana, but I like that "we" own all that BLM land.
If your local tax assessor's website grants you access to the property map, you should take a look at it. You may start to understand where Marx was coming from a little bit.

fair question. there are some things that would be gone before the market had a chance to correct itself. i could go into this more but i'll have to do it later.

i'd like to think we could have a market solution to scarce national resources like our National Parks and Forests, but I don't think we do. We can just apply market principles to them as much as possible without selling them off to the highest bidder.

call me a commie.

:commie:

and what RTS said:

wait, i'm confused, the article (i just started it) says:

quote:

Perhaps, biologists speculate, some anonymous angler wanted to diversify the fish population in the lake but didn't think through the consequences.

so why is that a problem unique to government-owned land?

New Yorks Central Park is a great example of a public land fulfilling a public need (fresh air, relaxation, concerts, zoo, etc) which would go bye bye in a minute if sold to private interests. You don't think the Chinese/Saudi's and Russians wouldn't build skyscrapers and condo's there if they got it in their hands? Of course they would and they would have limited public access (if any) just like they do in Dubai, parts of Moscow, etc.

my atlanta neighborhood is one of the best in town due in large part to the vision of olmsted and protection of his layout. linear parks and pre-revolutionary-war specimen trees within walking distance. it's all super prime property that would be turned into mcmansions if left to the market.

legit governmental function imo.
