The boat owner. All his friends are happy but the two best days of owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

Money does not make you happy. Money makes you insanely happy.

Me when my boat breaks down and I’m down in the engine compartment when it’s 100 degrees out

could have some fun with more money but it is because I already have my priorities in order. I don’t need money to “fix” my life

This. It would help me accomplish things I what such as my own farm. And some nice things like a good hunting camp, beach house, fishing cabin. I don’t need to fix my life, I’d live largely the same. Just with nicer stuff and more time to enjoy it rather than working all the time

BS! I'd take the problems with having a shite-ton of money vs the problems with not having enough.

I get what you're saying here BUT I would say the word "love" has a much more nuanced meaning in the verse than what meets the eye.

you struggle that much with financial education, take the annuity so you can get money each year rather than all up front.

This. Honestly unless you’re over 50, a jackpot this big you should take the annuity. I get taking lump sums on 150 million jackpots. A billion? Take the annuity so you aren’t overwhelmed. Plus, at least for me, I’d look at the lump sum plus taxes as leaving 500 million on the table rather than gaining 500 million. Annuity you end up with the whole billion, and can invest it certain ways to avoid some taxes

Money isn't everything, but it sure does help.

I actually think it is an interesting thought question - would you rather get $10,000,000 or $100,000,000 or $1,000,000,000

Presumably everyone answers $100,000,000,000but I imagine $10,000,000 would make for a happier life. If you get $10,000,000 you are financially secure for life, but still have to exist in the realm of reality. Maybe even continue to work (the horror), continue to live in your current house, stick with your current family and friends, etc.

If you get $100,000,000 or more that amount of money has so much gravity it will reorient your entire life around it. And that’s probably overwhelming a bad thing for the majority of people.

agree that billion is pain in Butt whereas a few million is nice.
if i got more than a few million i'd take the payments.

I’ve owned quite a few boats. They suck to own after a while in my opinion. I forget how much and buy another, then remember and sell.

Best boat I’ve owned was an off shore fishing boat. At least that had a purpose.

Not surprising.

I can't imagine managing to mess up this type of wealth though

If I wound up getting a couple hundred million after taxes I don't think I'd go broke. And I don't think most upper middle class people with some decent intelligence to them would go broke either.

Money is the greatest tool we have in the current day to become happy, or happier, or any other form of ‘happy’ …

I will gladly take the opportunity tomorrow to prove to these idiots just how happy $350m (after taxes) will make me

Happiness comes from something intangible that money can't buy.

Point is, you’re framing money as a vice only. I’m saying of all the variables & obstacles that go into someone being “happy,” money is the greatest tool & resource in the arsenal we can use to achieve happiness bc money buys back your time and more time equals more ability to focus your energy on the things that build happiness.

Money can’t provide a short cut to happiness, you still have to put in the physical work necessary, but money is the greatest tool we can use to our advantage to remove the variables that encumber happiness.

Unless you can think of a more effective & efficient resource we have to acquiring more time?
