It’s a “pilot” program, but we know where this leads.

quote:

Nestled inside the 2,702-page text is Section 13002, titled "National motor vehicle per-mile user fee pilot." That pretty much covers the meat and potatoes of this section's purpose: piloting a program that would tax drivers based on their annual mileage rather than at the pump.

If you do that and completely eliminate the taxes that are embedded in gas prices, at all levels, it could actually work better.

Of course, there's no way the government will REMOVE taxes.

What would make you think that a mileage tax would be instead of the gas tax? If it comes to pass it will be in addition to the gas tax.

why not just raise the gas tax? It taxes the same activity and rewards those who use vehicles with better gas milage, while punishing the evil too-big-truck driving rednecks.

why unnecessarily create a whole new system/bureaucracy, one that requires monitoring everyone's movements? he asked naively

There is a fair way to do this but who wants to be fair, right?

Keep the gas tax in IC vehicles.

For EVs you can meter the electricity required to charge the car THRU THE CAR, regardless of whether it's from a dedicated charging station or home/office hook up. The EV would report this to a local connection and charge an account for road use but not the electricity. That would be charged as it is currently.

How about this only applies to electric vehicles or place watt meters on charging stations that wouldn’t be any different than a gas tax and leave internal combustion engines out of the equation. That however would take a few more brain cells than what is in your average democrats head

And people still support these leftists?

Amazing.
I guess living in a bubble in a corrupt and crime ridden major city clouds ones judgement.

More govt tracking and control.

Any state, if not all, that do yearly inspections could just record the milage and report it back at how much is owed at registration. Infrastructure is already in place, so pretty simple. BUT no the pinko govt just wants a way to track us legally.

Sad. But this is where it's going with all the tech in EVs and newer cars. One day it will be illegal to drive in car that can't be tracked. Even INS companies won't cover them. Sad mostly for kids today that will never understand what freedom is, and that will be lost on their children. Generational change for sure.

Frick Cassidy. Backstabbing Deep State Rino. Karma will prevail. Those people do not love you and will drop you as soon as you are no longer useful.

Thinking of life after the Senate?
We will be watching and calling out anywhere you go and protesting and boycotting anything you do. Hope you made enough money off insider trading and pissing on the people of the State you are Supposed to Represent.

It's the perfect tax if your intent is to punish Red states, Republicans, and leave liberal bastions alone.

Income tax was a pilot program, as with almost all tax, including "non-tax" items like medicare and social security.. I know almost nobody here needs to hear this but The Government will not give your freedoms back!
