Lament or warning?

Microsoft president: Orwell's '1984' may 'come to pass in 2024' without AI protections

The acceleration of artificial intelligence technology could lead to a reality that looks very much like George Orwell's "1984," a top Microsoft executive warned Thursday. Company President Brad Smith said during an interview on the BBC that he believes there would be serious consequences if government regulation don't keep up with the development of new technology. "I'm constantly reminded of George Orwell's lessons in his book '1984.' You know the fundamental story ... was about a government who could see everything that everyone did and hear everything that everyone said all the time," Smith said on a BBC program exploring China's use of AI to monitor its citizens. "Well, that didn't come to pass in 1984, but if we're not careful that could come to pass in 2024," Smith continued. "If we don't enact the laws that will protect the public in the future, we are going to find the technology racing ahead, and it's going to be very difficult to catch up."

Problem - ponder who creates AI problems...
Reaction - government regulation
Solution - dystopian vision of central control by the technocrats

We’re pretty close, if not already at, predictive advertising. I have talked to people that firmly believe they’re seeing ads now on things they’ve THOUGHT about, not even said aloud. Ten years ago I would have laughed that off... now, not so much.

I don’t necessarily believe devices are reading minds, but have more or less become able to anticipate what the person may want in the future based on their past.

I’d swear to it.

Is it possible I said something to someone and didn’t remember? yes but it’s happened multiple times.

People will become more aware of this soon. Call it an algorithm or whatever, but I think it’s basically a formula that predicts what we’ll want based on our past purchases, searches, etc.

God creates man, man disproves God, man creates AI and AI "proves" God.

I don't think people realize how much data they are giving away. You have to take what many would call extreme measures to minimize it. Check out r/privacy or r/opsec.

There are trackers on almost every webpage. IP addresses, gps, phones/apps, smart home stuff, etc all linked together. Big tech probably knows your habits better than you.

This is all true. We are basically giving ourselves up to the convenience of AI and the issues that come with it.

Has happened to me more times in the last month than I am comfortable with. Mind blowing in a few specific cases.

Damn. This is exactly what President Eisenhower warned against in his farewell address.

It's almost like he knew things. /Sarcasm off

As life scenarios develop - good or bad - there is always a window of opportunity to get a glimpse of where things are going...and ACT accordingly. Sometimes the window is short, others prolonged.

When it comes to collective action, the Collective MUST be able to disperse likely (potential) scenarios and information and relative strategies. Media is THE essential mechanism in said process; lose the dissemination of information and those who hold it rule the roost, as they will determine the public narrative. I.e., Muh 'Insurrection' by those who fight AGAINST real insurrection like BLM/Antifa riots and the stealing of elections.

Trump had better get the Media Platform train rolling. The longer we wait, the more bloody the struggle to fend off Orwell's Fascists will be. Over half the population is already brainwashed and emotionally insane, with the MSM throwing gas on the emotive fire on a daily basis. And the 'government' (illegitimate version) crashing the Private Economy by printing money which they then use to fill the people's basic needs. A socially 'just' dispersing.

I swear at least 95% of the people who talk about 1984 have never read it. Gotta be the most misunderstood book of the 20th century.
