It's definitely more relevant what you do in early in your career post-graduate career than in the school itself. That said, everywhere Michael Cohen worked prior to the Trump organization his partners were getting disbarred, going to jail or both. Michael was a hustler who ingratiated himself to Trump by buying properties in Trump Tower and getting members of his Ukrainian Jewish emigre community to do the same. He helped put down an uprising of unruly tenants for Trump and landed himself a job in the organization. As the kids came of age, he had fewer deals and more shitwork like threatening reporters with defamation suits and playing bagman/NDA duty. It seems he was resentful when Trump didn't choose to bring him to Washington. He was still raking in the consulting dollars selling access, but it all eventually caught up...

Why would Trump ever hire a guy who went to a fourth-tier law school?
Because he is a flunkie who will do Trump's bidding like paying off porn stars

How law schools are graded is based largely on the bar passage rates of their graduates and the endowment of their university. If your university's endowment is large, that is usually indicative of having a large and successful alumni base that has the disposable income available to give back.
Obviously, the other factor is your grades IN law school, but with so many top tier law schools doing away with grades and class rank all-together, it makes it even harder to make an apples to apples comparison between graduates of different schools based purely on their transcripts.

Why hire a high$ guy to pay off your hoors? Any schlep with a shingle could do it. Cohen wasn't anything vital to Trump, no matter how the media portrays him

I think it's more average LSAT and GPA.

Depending on the type of law, it absolutely matters the quality of your law school. Firms want to be able to tout that to prospective clients.
Now the caliber of the individual lawyer may not be indicative of the law school he/she attended, but there are absolutely firms in this country that only hire from certain schools (or would not consider hiring from certain schools).
And I say this as a Southern grad.

Thanks. I went to law school, so I know a little bit about how the whole thing works.

Hence the whole "quality of your network" argument.

You think he only has one attorney?
Cohen did what Cohen was good at. He was a bagman who provided atty-client confidentiality (almost).

Because Trump is like an organized crime boss and he needed a crooked lawyer.
quote:Not True, he hies a lot of people, each suited to their intended purpose.
Trump never hires the best folks.
quote:Possibly, but it has also been reported that he want all differing opinions, so that sort of argues this point.
He hires sycophants.
Your TDS is showing.

I actually kind of agree with kingbob on that. I guess regionally it might matter here and there. But for the most part, unless you're top 20 in the country or top 20 in your class, the career is who you know.
Worked with a lovely Cooley grad for a couple of years who I think mainly went there due to scholarship and convenience aspects. I thought they clear out most of the idiots in the first year.

A little insight from Trump himself that suggests why he might not have cared about the quality of his law school:
Not good for the old "I was just following legal advice" defense, though.

@ryanjreilly:
More Trump, on Fox News, says Michael Cohen did more public relations than he did law, and that he hired Cohen because he was a “very supportive” member of the condo board.

I think they are one of the last schools around on the old LSU Law system of first year.

Because he was willing to do Trump's dirty work. No Harvard Law grad would do that.
He got started making only $70k (chump change over there) in New York City as a small-time lawyer and got Trump's attention by getting his condo's HOA Board thrown out over removing the Trump name from the building. Like any Mafia don, Trump appreciated that and gave him more stuff to do on the sly.
Which is why Cohen will be spending some time enjoying prison meals.
