Let me run this scenario by you...they cross the river and it isn't the military, its 15 or 20 of those militia guys.

Do you understand anything about handling a firearm? You never draw or aim a weapon unless you are prepared to fire. Period. Both sides understand this. And you definitely do not do this if you have a pistol and they have rifles. And if you had read the article carefully, it indicates only the sergeant was armed with an M9. It does not mention that the private was armed at all.

Tap the breaks Gladys. You have no idea what the ROE are for that AO. It sounds like they kept heads level, pointed out the Mexicans mistake and everyone went on their way. The alternative is a shoot out which in this case is a much worse option.

Can you give a plausible explanation for the reason the Mexican military were pointing their weapons (with intent to kill, per your words) at US citizens (Army, no less) on US soil? Hell, even in Mexico.
