Blame Ken Kesey (One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest) and others for this by demonizing institutionalization.

Not everyone should be in there but there are a LOT of people completely incapable of managing their own lives who would be better off there than living on the streets giving hang jobs for cash.

You can just go to the free health clinic right there and get rid of it though

Psych patients cause a big drain on ER resources as well.

Dixon Correctional in Jackson use to be colonies of East La State Hospital. The buildings were empty and the state needed a prison. A fence and some upgrades and there you go.

We could fund this easily

Cut those tens of billions to Ukraine and tone down some defense spending and it’s all there

vast majority of the wackos we see don't need to see a resumption of asylums, they need to see a resumption of public guillotines

Probably a few million need to be in a mental health in patient setting.. we’d probably see a dramatic crime (mostly small) decrease and definitely a increase in quality of life especially in urban areas

The ones trying to play a phonograph record with a peanut need to be institutionalized.

The ones on street corners as organized beggars need to be executed IMHO.

A portion of those people are in nursing homes along side maw maw and paw paw.

Staffing crisis in nursing homes? Well of course. A CNA is not going to get paid 12 dollars an hour to take care of a half dozen able bodied substance abuse schizophrenics one room over from paw paw just trying to recover from a hip surgery.

So how easy do you want to make it to send YOU to a padded cell?

Maybe somewhere along the path of being arrested 44 times for essentially being crazy

Well we can’t keep doing nothing. This dude is dead because he’s crazy and the system refused to deal with him. The government consistently enables them by allowing crazy often addicted people to skate through the system.

Been saying this for years.

About every county had an insane asylum back in the day.

"You want to wear women's clothes? Lock em up."

I don't disagree but like it or not, it has to happen.

And this isn't some random stuff on TD, I've been seeing a lot of op eds, articles and research about the necessity of bringing them back.

Obviously not the way it was in the 50s with the abuses etc, but things will continue to decline socially until we are able to put them away for their own safety and the safety of others.

Many countries continue institutionalization. I believe the Nordic countries do for violent offenders who are also mentally ill. Done right it's a very good thing.

That said, the govt currently endorses mental illness so it's not happening anytime soon.

It doesn't get more Big Government than when the state starts locking up citizens under the pretext of mental insanity.
