“We have to do two things. We have to generate economic growth which generates revenue, while reducing spending. That will mean instituting structural changes to Social Security and Medicare for the future,” Rubio told a crowd at a Politico conference.

“The driver of our debt is the structure of Social Security and Medicare for future beneficiaries,” said Rubio.

Marco to the rescue! Entitlement reform is coming finally and Marco is already leading the pack! Social security and Medicare combined equate to 38% of the federal budget only second to military spending. We need to reel in any more expansion of these benefits and cut them dramatically. We additionally need to go even further and cut all forms of welfare. We cannot incentivize people to not work. Marco is a working class American who knows exactly how to get this done.

I’m glad that this is being discussed as the logical next step in reducing the debt. But i’ve Got to admit there is zero chance that the feckless Senate can pass entitlement reform.

I am 56 so nearing the payoff after paying in and I agree this needs to happen. I have been reading about the trainwreck that is coming my entire adult life.

Only a matter of when, needed adjustment for age all along, should be about 73 by now if it had been incrementally increased all along

Don’t get me wrong, he is right. Cutting spending and entitlements has been the obvious solution for a while now.

However, after what we’ve seen this year, and ESPECIALLY given that 2018 is an election year (one in which Pubs hope to gain senate seats and hold the house), there is almost zero chance that the Senate even sniffs entitlement reform

Every republican would be painted as heartless, racist, wealthy autocrats. And of course instead of rationally presenting their argument and sticking to principles, they would injure themselves trying to backpeddle on every issue of importance. Because republicans on The Hill are largely spineless.

I do not know what to do about it now though. There is no way to do what is needed and remain politically viable.

The country will be demogogued into oblivion eventually because a rational debate on it is impossible.

If we want welfare cuts, I just want it to be ALL welfare.

No more food stamps? Okay, mo more farm aid.

Public Transportation cuts? Okay, no more gifts of 1 Billion dollar statiums to NFL owners.

No more help for poor kids with their student loans? Okay no more grants to companies to help them do research? If the poor can't experiment and learn in school, then we won't let tax dollars do that for Fortune 500 companies.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I just became SS and medicare eligible a month ago. However, I support the principle. I have no issue with means testing benefits even though it would mean I would get zero SS and probably very little medicare coverage.
At the very least SS needs to be transformed from a defined benefit program into individual accounts.

I think a very simple way to reform social security is to get rid of it insofar as a forced contribution and allow deferred compensation plans for anyone and basically gut the whole system. If you work and pay in, this would be a better method to ensure that money is in your retirement program anyway. If you don’t pay in, you don’t get the money, but either way the government shouldn’t have their hand in any of this. Of course it’s built to give something to the have nots, and this has caused it to balloon completely out of control. If it is truly designed as a retirement supplement, I don’t know how politicians can argue with the money going to independent retirement plans. Unfortunately this will never happen.

The most common sense thing for SS is to institute a retirement income ceiling over which you can't draw. SS is a pretty bad idea, but it's especially bad the way it works now. It was sold as a safety net to help get the very poorest people past end of work to death as the average life expectancy increased in the 20th century. There is no reason for people who retire comfortably to draw SS. Medicare, the main problem is fraud and waste. There is literally like half trillion dollars in fraudulent Medicare and Medicaid claims paid yearly

I get a raise every November when I surpass the SS max income. This needs to go away and would go a long way in fixing the SS issue. Simple fix, but I have no faith in simple fixes with our corrupt politicians.

slow your roll there little marco, soc sec isnt welfare and it needs to be increased NOT cut. senior citizens live on below minimum wage earnings as it is now and hasnt had any "real" cost of living adjustment for the last 10 years. most people dont even realize in the last 10 years soc sec recipients have gotten a whopping 3.7% increase in benefits?
that averages out 0.3% COL increase a year and who here things prices on things you need to live havent gone up in the last 10 years? my aunt is barely making it on $900 a month soc sec check and cant even afford to buy meat or running the a/c in summer

and this jackass wants to cut it more !!!!!!!!!!!!

yes cut welfare, cut medicare, cut medicade, cut SSI, cut lifetime unemployment, cut out the free obama phones, cut the free healthcare, cut the free EBT, cut all the free santa clause shite the democrats have been handing out for years, but LEAVE SOC SEC THE FRICK ALONG YOU MORONS !!!!!!!
