The whole point was the spectacle. It was to roll footage of Zelensky being either submissive or combative with Trump. He sees either way as weakening the position of pro-Ukrainian Republicans.

Well in my unbiased view, both sides looked bad. We especially do because we have a history of diplomacy and the version yesterday looked like a pile of ****. We are also supposed to be a super power. It's difficult to see a positive as to how China and Russia looked at that with other than amusement. And if we can argue the fecklessness of Biden caused the world we have today, then the comedy from yesterday will likely have unpleasant consequences.

Maybe you should have watched the interview. Rubio clearly explained, multiple times, that they’ve been doing this for 10 days “behind closed doors” and Zelenskyy repeatedly played games. And then they trotted themselves out in front of the camera. Trump and his administration used this to wash themselves of the difficult problem with Ukraine. Trump can now say, "I couldn't do it in one day and I couldn't do it in 40 days because Zelenskyy threw a wrench in the works".
Putin and Xi are dictators. They don't have to solve these sorts of problems.

Why do things need to be done behind closed doors? We are a sovereign people, distinct in the world and in history. Other countries (and our government) should respect the notion that even the lowest of us have the right to be informed about what’s happening with our lives and our fortunes. If you are a foreign leader you should treat every American with respect, honor OUR traditions and not act as if our support is automatic.
And if that means suffering for a hour in front of our free press so we can get an idea of who we are sending (a lot of) money to fight a war, then it’s not too much to ask. It’s also not too much to ask to not attempt to embarrass or condescend to the elected representatives of our people.

You obviously didn’t watch the entire meeting and only the last 10. They were there to sign the mineral agreement and that was Trump’s focus, as it should have been. Zelenskyy repeatedly tried to renegotiate the deal and alter it in front of the cameras. Zelenskyy was the antagonist, rolling his eyes, interrupting the President, and making more demands, not Trump and JD. Like I said, people like you will always blame Trump first rather than look at the situation with clear, unbiased eyes

Secretary of State Rubio has been an extremely pleasant surprise in this administration. I have to admit that I didn’t understand his selection whenever it first happened. But he has become tremendously effective, and I am very impressed about what I see with him.
