I'm not a lawyer, but can anyone be sent to prison, not to jail without a trial.

Manafort was under house arrest, wearing 2 ankle bracelets and that wasn't good enough.

The judge said that she could not monitor his phone, so you are going to prison.

This is so crazy.

If you're charged with a federal crime, you go to a federal detention facility.

He tried to bribe witnesses.

He got caught.

Did you know that you can be held indefinitely without charges? He's been charged and will have his day in court.

He is alleged to have committed crimes. I'm torn, if he is such a prick that he tried to tamper with witnesses to escape justice, he does deserves what he gets. However, I'm not privy to what evidence they have of either crime.

No you don't unless you are a threat to the public (like a serial killer) or a flight risk. Manafort is neither.

You can be granted bail.

If you violate the terms of your Bail, it's revoked.

When revoked, you are taken to a detention facility.

If you're charged with a federal crime, you go to a federal detention facility.

I didn't think I'd have to spell that out.

President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law today. The statute contains a sweeping worldwide indefinite detention provision.

quote:

“President Obama's action today is a blight on his legacy because he will forever be known as the president who signed indefinite detention without charge or trial into law,” said Anthony D. Romero, ACLU executive director. “The statute is particularly dangerous because it has no temporal or geographic limitations, and can be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield."

quote:

Under the Bush administration, similar claims of worldwide detention authority were used to hold even a U.S. citizen detained on U.S. soil in military custody.

The ACLU believes that any military detention of American citizens or others within the United States is unconstitutional and illegal, including under the NDAA. In addition, the breadth of the NDAA’s detention authority violates international law because it is not limited to people captured in the context of an actual armed conflict as required by the laws of war.

Just claim someone is a "suspected terrorist", is "suspected to have ties to terrorists" or is a "threat to national security" and the government can take away all their rights without charge or trial.

Because that’s what happens when you violate conditions of bond.
