Thanks, but my prediction didn't require a genius to make it, although technically I am a genius according to Mensa.

You called it early. I just was waiting to see how creative they would get, and as I suspected they were very creative. Including the railroad tracks was a good idea.

Do you think they can brainstorm and fix the I-10 through Southdowns now???

Maybe this will stop the brew ha ha. Maybe people will listen to Browning and do something about the schools.

OLOL is requesting annexation as well.
I thought the hospital itself was already in the city limits, but I could be wrong about that.

Maybe they are referring to property which the OLOL owns along Picardy or Hennessey on the "other" side of Essen Lane from the hospital.

I know there is an OLOL oncology group on Picardy almost adjacent to the BR General Hospital. There is a small area of vacant land between the OLOL oncology group and the BR General Hospital.

They would just have to remove the signatures of the few residents who might live in the included area who signed. I'm thinking it's likely Rainey is already looking for an excuse to suspend the petition drive by blaming this annexation rather than admitting they couldn't get the required number of signatures. It's merely a face-saving excuse.

No residents are being annexed. It's all commercial properties.

Rainey is either wrong, or it's a major change which makes everything null and void.

For instance, I signed the petition thinking the entire SG area was the entire SG area.

Now if I knew the mall was out then perhaps I wouldn't have signed. I'm just guessing here, I don't know.

Russian, in the Advocate article there is a link to the petition. You can follow the link and the area being annexed is described.

I personally don't want it to stop "the brewhaha."

I want the pressure to stay on both the CP government and the school board to work even harder for improvements.

The worst thing that could happen now for our parish would be for Holden or the EBR school board to take a victory lap and ignore the issues. That would royally piss me off.

And that includes if the recent grade changing episode leads to Taylor, then he needs to be fired along with anyone who participated in it.

Apparently, you're correct.

Here is a quote from an updated article from the OP's link:
quote:

Supporters of an effort to create a new city in East Baton Rouge Parish say the potential annexation would “invalidate” efforts to incorporate St. George because it would alter the area defined in their petition.

“It would change the boundaries of the city of St. George and immediately stop the process,” St. George spokesman Lionel Rainey said.

ETA: But I do have to wonder why the previous annexation of the Celtic Studios and Costco a couple of weeks ago did not stop the process but this annexation would. The previous annexation changed "the boundaries of the city of St. George" didn't it?

Same here, unless the fact those three properties straddled the line and could be considered inconsequential, but again its pure speculation on my part.

Well, not sure if this squashes the forming of the city, but it does put a kink in things.

Congratulations, BR. Apparently bully tactics, race bating, and general political hackery can make a difference.

Now BR can continue to waste tax dollars on BR schools and continue to have extremely poor education for the children of BR. Congrats guys, you did it. Stupidity reigns supreme, and BR flight will continue to follow.

You think the current politicians are going to do anything about the school system? They just proved they won't have to change their thinking when it comes to EBR schools.

St. George City is dead if this happens.

No way they could create a city now without raising taxes. People will not sign a petition knowing taxes will rise ALOT so basically it's dead!

Move on to fixing the school issue now and first thing EBR needs to do is get rid of Taylor..

Speaking of education in BR, my kid's class recently read Harrison Bergeron (7th grade). Pretty sure that's not standard reading in EBR middle schools.

So you think the owners of the Mall of La and the board of directors of the BR General Hospital were bullied and race baited and that's why they petitioned to be annexed into BR?

Oh, certainly. Now that the City of Baton Rouge is locking down it's tax base, eliminating the dreaded "doubt and uncertainty" posed by the St. George incorporation, and assuring we will all be "Better Together", these dedicated and competent leaders will move on to solve the traffic, crime and education issues on short notice.
Don't forget, how many other cities have already built a loop for only $900,000?:

Yep.

As far as the public school issue is concerned, certain kids will get to keep their special Magnet Schools, and some will continue to suffer in the mediocrity that passes for a Public School System.
The rest, will move out of the Parish. Which I'm sure will make Kip Holden very happy.

You do realize that fixing the school issue, or the lack thereof by EBR school officials, and BR bureaucrats is what led to the St. George petition in the first place, right?

Schools have always been the issue. BR fought tooth and nail against SG in order to retain their power over the failing school system. Now that they are winning the tax dollar battle, do you think they will actually do something to interrupt their power struggle? frick no. When has a government entity ever relinquished power to do what's right for the community, rather than for themselves?

Status quo preserved.
