Still the most direct and honest quote I've heard from a politician in many, many years.
No need to explain it further to a dingbat local "journalist". The quote speaks for itself.

quote:
"Too many people now realize that this town is run by a small group of elite businessmen who have teamed up with the Poverty Pimps that control votes with an endless supply of 5 dollar bills and even more empty promises," Heck said.
No need to explain it further to a dingbat local "journalist". The quote speaks for itself.

Sad part is the middle class with families will eventually leave the city and parish.
Businesses will follow, but we will be stuck with a city parish government that will still suck more money out of the people left.
Baton Rouge will have a huge void in classes you will have rich people and poor people with very little middle class.

Honest? What about that shows any honesty? He provided nothing to back up any of his claims. I'd respect him if he actually called a specific politician out rather than blame all administrations of the last 100 years. He can't do that though because he'd be sued for libel because he has nothing to back it up.

The business climate in BR is better than it's been in recent memory right now.

Too bad we aren't growing families

Agreed. I wish a petition to remove Superintendent Taylor would get started.

Please explain why the middle class will flock back to public schools once you slap a St. George name on it. I still have not heard this from anyone.
The reason the middle class isn't attending public schools is still there.

does not compute? according to the malcontents, if you are against them you are for the "status quo"
This doesn't sound like the talk of an elite businessman or poverty pimp

Elementary Watdon
In the last 40 years the number of children between th edges of. 5 and 17 have declined in EBR Parish and the reason obviously is schools.
If schools are satisfactory people will flock to those parishes as shown in Ascension and Livingston and to a smaller degree in Central and Zachary.
Now the doubting Thomases like yourself can't see a SG school district bring better than EBR schools, but I and many others can because the bar isn't that high .
Let's start growing a parish that is more than business friendly, let's grow a parish where families can comfortably grow a family too.
Losing school age children over 40 years as thd population nearly doubles says it all.

More news will break tonight about the effects of the petition on annexations......
Well? We're waiting.

We have a school board member in trouble, Taylor 's number two caught in the act, and Taylor himself lying.
That's three petitions right there .
But Taylor is relatively new to the party. Replacing him will just give us another hack as we have seen before .

But How? Changing the name of the owner of the school does not change the demographics. Demographics drive school grades. The "gangbangers" that parents of afraid of aren't going to turn into a saint just because they live in Saint George. And the plan is to bus in more low income students from one of the cities most violent neighborhoods.
I find it hard to believe your assumption that people will bail on private schools that they have been happy with for generations now for the love of their new community.

They may even get them in before the 28th,anyway.
Not according to the meeting tonight.
quote:
At a community meeting at Woodlawn Baptist Church in East Baton Rouge Parish, they said it’s not clear yet whether the proposed annexation of the Mall of Louisiana and two major local hospitals would invalidate their petition and force them to start over.
But they’re focusing on getting the 18,000 signatures they need -- and getting them before the council can approve those annexations.
If the campaign can continue at the pace they’re at, committee chairman Josh Hoffpauir said they can reach that number within four to six weeks. That’s the firmest and closest timeline anyone from the campaign has put forward in recent months.

I was there.
As far as news breaking,it didn't. This was more of a cheerleader meeting than I expected, honestly.
PART of the news I was refering to was that the Mayor has moved the annexation issue up from May 28th, to now May 14th. There is a reason for this that I won't speculate on here. I don't have an answer as to why that part wasn't brought up in tonight's meeting.

To start with there is a complete change of philosophy. An entirely different administration thst puts kids first and not the teacher unions.
Then you go to neighborhood schools which will require neighborhood schools and yes a capital program, but we are paying taxes for capital improvements right now . It's just the taxes go to a failed system.
Nobody believes gangbangers are going to change to Rhodes Scholars, so you get them out of the mainstream and into alternative schools and away ftom kids who are there to learn. Sort of a magnet system in reverse.
The status quo has killed families in EBR. Four thousand fewer school age kids than there was 40 years ago.
This is totally unacceptable.

Why?
I cannot understand why St. George can't admit that they have been just as much to blame in contributing to this problem. Even as you are touting the power of community involvement, you go right back into the apathy that brought you here.
Has Rainey really convinced everyone that they have been disenfranchised all this time?

Anything to change the rules. I thought there was a set time for a public notice then a hearing.
