Someone should check to see if there’s any lithium under the 9th ward

This is a blessing.

So a lithium pit mine in our own back yard... so no more slave labor in third world countries supplying lithium for a China conglomerate. I can literally dig it-- clean, reasonably safe lithium technology.

Being on US soil is an amazing motivator for the powers that be to look into better methods of extracting and processing a resource.

Hard to run campaigns on clean environmentally friendly electric cars when your opponent starts running attack ads with this shite.

For how many years? How big is the hole in the earth gonna be? For comparison,

The hole was dug back in the 1920's till probably a couple decades ago. It's an oilfield called the Smackover formation. Brine is a byproduct of drilling for oil. It's down there with it and you have to pull it up to get the oil. Can't be avoided. So what they do with it is they then inject it back into the ground in various places where they just have to turn on pumps to pull it back out.

Smackover brine is some of the richest in the world for Bromine. And lithium amongst a lot of other stuff. Theres been plants there processing it for bromine for a very long time since there's few places you can get it out of the ground like this. A Canadian company called Standard Lithium built a test plant to see if they could make lithium extraction profitable. It worked. So yeah, you can bet your arse they're going to pull that brine back into the pipelines going to the plants and start processing the lithium out of it.

Ecological impact will be whatever area the plant will occupy but other than that, nothing. They're not drilling for it. They've already got it.

Really confused here because I've been in both those plants many times. Plus the one doing acid. And all the others associated with this stuff up there.

Just a wild guess but he probably bought stock in SLI a couple years ago and hasn't seen a return on it yet.

Ah. Yeah it's going to take somebody with the capital to make it at scale. They were always kinda low on the cap side. I talked to the guy running the company at one point and he was excited to say the least. I guess they just never got it done. Haven't been up there in a few years.

It's one of the most abundant elements on the planet so I guess we'd all be dead.

bullshite. The NIMBY Karens will drive their Teslas to the site to protest. They want EVs as long as the materials are being mined by child slave labor in Africa. They don't want to actually have to see how they're made.

Lithium is far from abundant in the earth's crust-- it ranks 33rd among the elements in commonness, only about 1/3 as common as copper and one-fourth as much as nickel or zinc. It's slightly scarcer than cobalt and lead, and even the prized rare-earth element SCANDIUM, which adds strength to aluminum bats and bicycle frames (required for supporting fat-bottomed girls).

This whole story is overblown. First off, ppl are not going to be getting oil rich there b/c the Arkansas oil and gas commission only pays lithium production by acerage you own... Not by well to well/barrel production.

Second, you have to extract so much saltwater/brine to get just a minute amount of lithium. The most they think they can even get per year is 6000 metric tons, which equals about $220M (GROSS) total.

Standard lithium has yet to really make anything off this and they have been there for a decade or more trying.

Go look at Standard's stock... It barely jumped and is still at $4/share after yesterday's story.

The method they are using for extraction is also just reusing old brine dump wells they already extracted the bromine out of.

In saying all that, those two counties on the LA line (Union and Columbia) are essentially the only places in the US that even remotely produce lithium.

Those areas also don't have nearly the infrastructure to take in some kind of boom now. They also don't have nearly enough ppl to fill jobs. There are a ton of chemical, oil and gas, timber, and defense contractor jobs in that area and none of them can fill their workforce to capacity as it is.
