What's the point of hollow point bullets? I'm asking as I don't know don't take it as sarcasm. We have surgeons conferences across the us some open to the public. I would like to know more about guns and different types of bullets as I think it would help. i don't think guns are bad I'm just trying to learn.

So when you shoot someone, it does more damage thereby reducing the odds that the person keep advancing.

They’re typically much more effective in stopping a threat and also do not overpenetrate as often, avoiding collateral damage to unintended targets.

These threads really bring out the technical and legal incompetents on firearms. Amazing how absolutely uneducated some are about the existing legal landscape with respect to firearms, especially the Fudds that call themselves gun owners yet advocate for magazine capacity limits and restrictions on semi-automatic rifles.

I want to see a Dem put his money where his mouth is. Propose a law and let's see how it plays out.

A full metal jacket can punch clean through and typically does not "mushroom". A hollow point causes the bullet to expand on impact making the bullet larger when it enters the target - which causes more tissue damage and can "bounce" around inside causing even more damage...
They once made a round called the Black Talon for handguns that I believe Winchester quit making voluntarily. The bullet mushroomed into a five/six point razor that tore flesh. It was a very effective round for personal protection. However, trauma surgeons complained because the wounds were so severe and supposedly the bullets cut some of them when they were trying to remove them.

quote:Doc, we've had some fun at your expense, but you need to understand the myths that exist around guns that get retold and exaggerated to crate a political narrative.

You seem like a sincere guy. And your admission that you don't know about guns is helpful. Anyone can be taught.
What you need to understand is the "powerful" AR-15 bullet is only about half the diameter of a pencil and very light weight. (That's why we're laughing about the "power" of a .223. It's not a powerful round at all). Put simply a hollow-point bullet is just that... the end of hte bullet is hollowed out. So when it hits a target it fracturs and expands so the bullet out punches above its weight.
quote:Yet... you were talking earlier about the need to outlaw guns like the AR? No offense... but that's a REALLY strong opinion about something you admit to knowing nothing about.

It would be like me opining about that k-wires should(or not) be used for olecranon ORIFs.

I posted on this board to state an opinion and to listen to others opinions. I don't agree with some politically and agree with others but I think if you listen to just your side and nothing else you don't learn anything new or see others views. I could go talk to Florida or Falcons fans but I don't learn as much...

Check out the fair and balanced reporting.
quote:
“Think about what was happening right before this massacre took place. We have a Congress here in Washington, D.C., that was moving in the exact opposite direction,” Przybyla said. “They were preparing to loosen gun regulations, to allow people to use these silencers, to make them more available.” “Because the hunters, their ears were hurting,” Ruhle said mockingly, putting her hands over her ears. “Because those hunters, their ears were hurting.” Przybyla repeated the talking point of “how much worse” the situation in Las Vegas would have been if the killer had used a silencer.

quote:It's easy to forget that so many people learn about guns from the movies. That's getting worse, as fewer and fewer young people are introduced to shooting and hunting. They have no idea about them except what they have seen in movies.

And generally speaking... EVERYTHING you see in a movie about guns is wrong.
There are people that acutally think a handgun can physically throw a person back 10 feet! Physics be damned!

The BEST ting gun-owner advocates can do is take a anti-gunner to shoot. Familiarity dispels the irrational fear in many, many cases.

Ask Obama. His DHS purchased 1.6 billion of them-- enough to shoot every American man woman and child 5 times-- despite them being banned for use in international warfare since 1899.
Eta. That's about the same amount of small arms ammo used during an entire year in the height of the Iraq war.
